Now
that you are clear on your goals, the desired
outcome and the purpose driving you - it is time to develop your plan of action!
The outcome of your plan is to devise the specific
actions that you need to take that will move you closer to your goal. The
biggest thing to remember here is that, similar to during the goals
exercise, you should be creative and let your thoughts flow as you
brainstorm the potential actions that will help you move towards your
desired outcome.
specific
actions
There are three important
points to note before you start your planning brainstorm:
There are many ways to achieve a single objective, so
don't give up after you have only listed one or two.
For instance, if
your outcome is to become fluent in French you could: move to
France to immerse yourself in the language, subscribe to French
newspapers
and magazines, buy an audio programme, buy a tutorial for your
computer, go to night school, read French websites, buy a French/English
phrasebook, learn ten new words per day, hire a French 'au pair',
get home tuition, listen to French music, take an Open University
course, visit online forums for support etc.
Just because you have listed all of these actions does not mean
that you have to accomplish them all! It is important to remember
the 80/20 rule in this instance, in that 20% of your actions are
likely to lead to 80% of our outcomes. Often a smaller number
of actions result in the largest difference to your life.
Your goals and actions should remain flexible! Just because you have set these
goals at this moment in time does not mean that this will always
make sense to you. You
should review your goals every now and then (week/month/year -
whichever works for you) to make sure that they are still relevant
to your life. For instance, if you set your goals twelve
months ago and now you are about to have a child then your goals
and purpose will probably shift slightly!
Exercise: take
each outcome/result that you specified in the previous exercise
and list every possible action you could take that would move
you towards the attainment of that goal.
Again, that there is no right or wrong answer and you
should note what makes sense to you, not anyone else.
