step three > fun 'thing' goals

These goals are simply the thing goals that you want to achieve - what are the fun, material goals that you want to gain?  There are a lot of negative connotations surrounding wanting material things, as being greedy etc.  But why not?  Do not feel greedy, do not feel selfish - just brainstorm the fun things that you would like to have in your life!  They do not even have to be the things that cost money, it can literally be anything!

The aim of this exercise is, again, to brainstorm literally any 'thing' that you would love to have.  As with all of these exercises, it does not have to be realistic at this stage and you do not even have to have any idea of how you would go about achieving it now - but just have fun.

Be creative:
  • would you like a great house out in the countryside?
  • would you like a holiday home in Hawaii or a cottage in New Zealand?
  • would you like to have a chef and a cleaner?
  • what type of car or bike or boat would you love to have?
  • would you love to have your own music studio?
  • what things would you like for your kids, friends or family?
  • would you like to have a tennis court?
  • would you love to have a new guitar?
  • what kind of clothes would you like to have?
  • what sort of holidays would you like?
  • would you like a home gym or swimming pool?
  • would you love a wine cellar?
  • what about having an attic bedroom that looks out to the stars at night?
  • anything - be creative!

In the next 1-20 years what 'things' would you love to have in your life? This exercise will be a lot of fun, so be creative and write for five minutes as fast as you canGO!

Now that you have your list, go through each of your goals and write a time that you will achieve them.  Next to each goal write either 1, 3, 5 or 10 depending on whether you are committed to achieving each goal within 1 year or less, 3 years, 5 years or 10 years.  You do not need to know exactly how you are going to achieve it yet, just that you can and will.

Next, select your top 3-5 one year, 'thing' goals that you are 110% committed to achieving and then under each of these goals, write out a paragraph (or two) about why you are totally committed to achieving it.  Think about what it will mean to you to have this goal become a reality.  What difference would it make to you and those around you?  How would your life be different?  How much better would you life be? How much fun would it be?!

NEXT STEP > Now that you have your personal development and your thing goals for the next one, three, five and ten years set you are ready to move on to your next goalsetting exercise - your financial goals!
