	Ingredients: Tincture of Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil’s Claw) dried root, extracted in alcohol (66% v/v). Directions for use: Tincture: Adults: 15-20 drops 2 to 3 times daily in a little water. Children (2-12 years): 1 drop per year of age 2 to 3 times daily in a little water. Tincture Tablets: Adults: 1 tablet twice daily. Maintenance: 1 tablet daily. The maintenance dose is appropriate long term for chronic conditions. Note: These tablets should be swallowed whole with a small glass of water. The tablets are specially coated to ensure that they are not deactivated by gastric juices. The tablets contain lactose. This product is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. How long can it be taken for? No restrictions to long term use. For maximum benefit in immune dysfunction, it is likely that Devil’s Claw will have to be used for six to twelve months. Pregnancy and Nursing: This product is not recommended unless directed by a Healthcare Professional.
	DETAILED DESCRIPTION
	What is it used for? Inflammatory conditions eg. fibromyalgia, muscular pain, joint pain (bursitis) and gout Arthritic complaints Rheumatic complaints Autoimmune conditions eg. systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis Allergies eg. hayfever Sports injuries Why is it needed? Inflammation is a defensive response of the body to injury which causes widening (dilation) of blood vessels with redness, pain, heat and swelling. The process involves the release of prostaglandins which stimulate pain receptors. Devil’s Claw has been shown to be beneficial in acute and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system where pain and inflammation are present. Its action has none of the side effects of conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Devil’s Claw may stabilise the immune system which gives it a role in the treatment of allergies such as hayfever, as well as making it helpful in autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and SLE. How does it work? Devil’s Claw contains a group of components known as iridoids which possess anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic and pain killing properties. The anti-inflammatory action has been shown to be equivalent to that of steroids, but the plant itself does not seem to contain steroids, which may be why it does not have the side effects associated with steroid use.
