Milk Thistle is a large plant with glossy, green, spiky leaves bearing conspicuous white veins. The flowers are large and purple. Milk Thistle seeds have a long history of medicinal use. It was previously used for its bitter properties, but more recently it has been recognised as an excellent remedy for liver complaints. Why is it needed? The liver performs many vital functions in the body. It stores vitamins and minerals, produces bile which is required for the breakdown of fat and is the main organ involved in the metabolism of food, drugs and hormones. Liver impairment can produce liver and gall bladder complaints and digestive disturbances eg. nausea/indigestion after eating fatty foods, high cholesterol and weight problems. It is now well established that liver herbs can play an important role in restoring physiological function in these conditions. The liver is involved in the process of detoxification and if it is not working well, skin complaints may worsen. Milk Thistle Complex is a tincture prepared by combining a number of liver herbs. It is a traditional herbal liver tonic which strengthens, cleanses and protects the liver. The combination of Artichoke, Milk Thistle and Dandelion is synergistic, enhancing the efficacy of the preparation. How does it work? The main constituent of Milk Thistle appears to be the substance known as silymarin. This has the unique function of being able to act directly on the cells of the liver, producing a liver-protective effect. Silymarin is able to prevent liver cell damage, through stimulating the function and regeneration of liver cells. All these factors are important in overall health, with the liver acting as the most important avenue for the elimination of toxins found within the body. |
