OK, so normally I wouldn’t have posted about something that has been debated to death. However, I was prompted by the realisation that perhaps not everybody does understand the difference between, and the benefits of organic produce over non-organic produce. I thought they did, but I was clearly mistaken.
This was a real, actual experience – I kid you not:
I was in the supermarket with my girlfriend last weekend (yes, bloggers do have a real life too…honest) and we overheard this conversation:
Girl: Shall we get the organic ones?
Boy: Erm, yeah OK
Girl: What does organic mean?
Boy: Dunno, I think it means it is grown without eggs.
WHAT?! GROWN WITHOUT EGGS? If someone can name ANYTHING that is grown WITH eggs I will happily eat my hat. The scariest thing about it was that they were fully grown people of at least 24 years of age.
The second most bizarre thing was that she was totally happy with this explanation and proceeded to put her ‘grown without eggs’ sausages into her basket. That was apparently enough of a reason for her and so she was willing to spend that little bit extra.
And that is what prompted my little article below. I mean, come on, imaging how much better off the world would be if everything was grown without eggs. There is clearly still a lack of knowledge out there about what organic means and why people should or should not purchase it. If the ‘grown without eggs’ couple are satisfied enough with that reason to spend more then surely the mass market is at the mercy of the marketing teams over at Sainsbury, Tesco et al…
