Vegetarian Diet is Best for Weight Loss

by Ross on April 6, 2006

The absolutely marvellous Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) have released another great study showing that vegetarians tend to:

  • be slimmer than meat-eaters
  • have lower rates of heart disease
  • lower rates of diabetes
  • lower rates of high blood pressure
  • and a lower risk of degenerative disease and obesity!

The thing I love about the PCRM is that they dedicate a lot of time and money to putting scientifically rigourous research behind natural health claims that we all know make sense. The biggest difficulty that I, and many many others, have had when trying to champion natural health and nutrition is that most people are still sold on the ancient philosophies that eating a ton of meat and drinking a glass of milk is good for you. You can’t blame them really as the megabucks of the meat and dairy industry (and the golden handshake of countless governments) has ensured that despite glaring truths, they have been able to brainwash people for far longer than they should have been allowed to.

Anyway, so the PCRM are putting weight and rigour behind these studys to at last give us some credibility – rather than just saying “c’mon – it’s obvoius – it just makes sense, meat and dairy are full of fat etc” (that is a lame example but you know what I mean!).

This new review, compiling 87 previous studies, highlights that while obesity in the general public is growing massively year-on-year (see this previous post and this one too - oh and my next post) – the obesity prevalence in vegetarians ranges from 0% – 6%.

This supports the study conducted last summer at Tufts University in Boston which looked at 55,000 Swedish women and found that that those who ate little or no meat weighed significantly less than their more carnivorous counterparts.
