Wheatgrass juice does a lot of good. That is a fact.
But when I was recently asked about the benefits that wheatgrass juice may have in terms of hair colour I must admit I had to dig deep into my wheatgrass knowledge! I had heard a while ago about this being a positive benefit of wheatgrass consumption but I had never really given it a great deal of thought.
Wheatgrass is a very powerful grass for sure, in that it:
- is High in Chlorophyll, nature’s most health-promoting nutrient
- contains 20 amino acids
- provides several hundred different enzymes not found in other foods
- contains as many as 90 out of the possible 102 minerals
- a complete food rich in essential vitamins, minerals, complete protein, fiber, enzymes, fatty acids, phytonutrients and more
- rich in SOD (superoxide dismutase), a potent free radical scavenging antioxidant.
It is also a remarkable cleanser, detoxifier and can definitely help the body to regenerate itself. To this end, one of it’s reputed regeneration based benefits is that it can help hair to restore itself, returning back to it’s natural strength and colour. It seems to follow (quasi) logically that if wheatgrass is able to help the body to regenerate itself, then why not?
However, if you are thinking that this might be something you could try then I would err on the side of caution here with setting your expectations. While there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest that wheatgrass’ healing properties can restore colour to hair - there is also a lot of scientific evidence to suggest that grey hair can be hereditary. I sincerely think that wheatgrass and other grasses are exceptional, but I accept that they cannot change our DNA structure! If your greying is hereditary then it may be difficult for you to naturally restore your hair colour.
However, If you do want to pursue this route, I would suggest using both fresh wheatgrass and a grass-blend supplement (as there are properties in barley, kamut and other grasses that are not contained within wheatgrass).
I really believe you could get the results you are after if you are thinking about trying this - but to be quite honest with you, the health benefits you would receive from consuming wheatgrass on a regular basis would be so great that if you did see any results with your hair, then this would be an added bonus!
For more research I would check out:
This forum and other forums (just search for raw food forums in google)
Wheatgrass for Life (no affiliation despite the name!)
Bondi Wheatgrass
So in summary I would say that - yes, it could definitely be possible but you would need to be very disciplined and consistent in your wheatgrass consumption, potentially growing and juicing your own fresh wheatgrass alongside using a wheatgrass supplement - it is not a quick fix by any means!
