Passionate About Milk? But What’s Your Flavour?

by Ross on June 12, 2006

word upThere has been a huge amount of debate on the pro’s and con’s of different types of milk, with the most passion usually surrounding the benefits of drinking/avoiding dairy. However, this article on the BBC really piqued my interest - not because of the run down it gives of the various milky choices, but because of the comments at the end of the article.

Have a read of the article and the comments here.

I really liked the fact that the comments brought out so many opposing views:

If I have to drink ‘moo juice’ now for any reason to me it tastes and smells utterly RANCID!!

That’s what milk’s meant to be like. You know what you can do with the bean juice.

i now can’t abide the stuff.

I think cow & goat milks taste bad enough, I’m not going out of my way to try another species no matter what the apparent benefits.

Totally ignoring the fact that it is unnatural and drinking cow’s milk is linked to different diseases including cancer.

And more to the point, as the article points out, it’s absolutely disgusting - it tastes more like battery acid than milk.

I would tend to agree with the comments that questioned the author’s bias towards cows milk as her review of soy milk was a disgrace - especially considering how popular it is now (and the decision not to include rice milk was slightly absurd too). Personally I cannot stand cow’s milk anymore either, and while I recognise the shortcomings of soy milk I think it is the lesser of the two evils by far.

But what are your thoughts on milk? Which type of milk do you prefer to drink?

Hi

I have been drinking soya milk for about 2-3 years now, and you really do get used to the taste after a while. I remember when I first started drinking it and it tasted a bit weird, but now it is cow’s milk that tastes weird! Yuk! I just wondered - some soya milks are really white, and others are a really murky grey. Which is better?

Hi Anna

Thanks for stopping by to comment - it is really appreciated!

The colour of soy milk is most often a reflection of the variety of soy bean that has been used to produce the milk - so it is not something that I would be overly concerned about. The thing to watch with soy milk is whether artificial sweeteners have been added which is often the case with the supermarket brands. Look for unsweetened soy, and preferably one that is not flavoured (as these often contain lots of extra sugar).

I hope this helps!
