How to Kick-Start Your Sex Drive With Libido Boosting Foods!

by Ross on September 20, 2006

bananasAccording to the Durex World Sex Survey - globally we are having sex:

  • 103 times per year, or
  • 1.98 times per week, or
  • 0.28 times per day, or
  • 0.012 times an hour, or
  • 0.00019 times per minute!

COME ON PEOPLE! We can do better than that!

Because I am so socially conscious and to help this global cause, I have highlighted a few foods here that are reknowned for helping boost the libido.

Sex-drive boostin’ superfoods:

  1. Celery: considered an excellent food to ramp up sexual stimulation. The reason being that it boosts a powerful substance known as androsterone - an odorless hormone released through male perspiration. ‘Yuk’ I hear you, er, think. Well, this is one of those kind of sweats that has that strange effect on women…the same effect that I understand a dozen red roses and a bottle of champagne has (apparently).
  2. Maca: this is a less common food, but is no less potent. Having only recently been introduced to the Western world you will be forgiven for not finding it in your local Tesco. I had not heard of this until very recently when it was hailed as “Nature’s Viagra . Like anyone else, this claim made me curious. According to some it is believed to improve sexual performance, the frequency with which people desire sex and can be effective in increasing sperm count! Not only that, but guys should expect an increase in testosterone, a helping hand in any fight against erective dysfunctions and impotency and it also makes you feel younger. Quality! Fear not ladies - for women, maca is reknowned for increasing sex-drive and fertility! What a stormer!
  3. Pumpkin Seeds: Pumpkin seeds contain zinc, which is important in testosterone production for men and also helps to sustain sexual desire in women. Pumpkin seeds are also rich in the essential fatty acid omega 3, which acts as a precursor of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that play a key role in sexual health. Word on the street is that a diet rich in pumpkin seeds will enhance potency, drive and fertility.
  4. Saurkraut: an unlikely inclusion, but a vital key in unlocking your libido according to the headteacher-like Scottish diet guru Gillian McKeith has deemed sauerkraut sexy, citing a U.S. study that reported 90 percent of men were more “active” after eating it. Not as saur or krauty as you though eh?!
  5. Bananas: help to boost male libido largely due to the presence of the enzyme ‘bromelain’ . Bananas are also a good source of B vitamins like riboflavin and potassium, which increase the body’s total energy levels. However, they are also very rich in potassium and B vitamins, which are vital for sex-hormone production!
  6. Almonds: Almonds are another major source of essential fatty acids. Almonds provide the basis for the healthy production of male hormones that are important in regulating sex-drive (among other things obviously!). The smell of almonds is found to arouse passion in female. Although I am not 100% convinced by the latter!
  7. Avocado: The Aztecs called the avocado tree ahuacatl or “testicle tree.” Interesting fact. Avocado helps to increase both male and female libido. As it contains very high levels of folic acid, it assists in metabolising proteins, thus providing you more energy - which is obviously good all round. Avocado also features vitamin B6 (a nutrient which improves male hormone production) and potassium (which helps to regulate a woman’s thyroid gland). Quality!
  8. Asparagus: it is not only the ever-so-slightly suggestive shape of asparagus that acts as a libido booster - asparagus also happens to be very high in vitamin E, which has long been thought of as ‘the sex vitamin’. The Vegetarian Society suggests “eating asparagus for three days for the most powerful affect”.
  9. Chilies: may heat up your sex life too, due to capsaicin — the substance that gives kick to peppers, curries and other spicy foods. Triggering the release of endorphins, capsaicin is therefore a feelgood chemical for your brain! It also stimulates nerve endings and raises your heart rate. IMPORTANT: if you chop the chilies yourself - make sure you wash your hands very very thoroughly - heh
  10. Basil: apparently basil increases circulation, stimulates the sex drive and boosts fertility! It is also said to produce a general sense of well being for body and mind. But most curiously of all, its scent is supposed to drive us wild! In fact, basil oil was once employed by Mediterranean prostitutes as a perfume to attract customers! Pesonally, the scent of basil makes me want to drive to the nearest Italian restaurant, but that’s just me.
  11. Cardamom: Cardamom is an nicely aromatic spice. In many cultures it is viewed as an intensely powerful aphrodisiac and also beneficial in treating impotence (mix with maca for some ‘interesting results’). It is high in cineole, which can increase blood flow in certain important areas!
  12. Figs: rather crudely, some sources suggest that figs work as an aphrodisiac because of their appearance being similar to certain sex organs, but not I. Figs are very high in amino acids, which are critical to increasing you libido and boosting sexual stamina.
  13. Garlic: bad on the breath but good on the sex drive. Maybe this is one for long-term couples who don’t have as much worry over little matters such as garlic-breath (as long as you both munch it, you’ll be OK). Garlic contains high levels of allicin – an compound - that can improve blood flow to the sexual organs. But note - don’t just munch on big cloves of raw garlic! Allicin is only produced once garlic has been chopped as it is produced through an enzyme reaction. As a bonus, allicin is also has great anti-fungal properties (not that I am suggesting anything of course…)

So go forth! Read, eat and enjoy!!!

Can’t agree more, Ross.

If you happen to drop by in Singapore, you should try the Chilli Crabs at East Coast and Indian Ox’s tail (not in soup form but the gravy is enough to send you to the moon). Definitely spice things up. All you need is to find the right partner to keep up with you! =)

6 Karen September 21, 2006 at 3:50 pm

Thanks Ross. I didn’t notice til after I posted. Duh!

LOL Ross, that hadn’t occured to me but NOW that’s all that is on my mind, along with that banana ;). I’m actually all caught up on the how-to lists now, a small miracle I think. Of course, my house is a mess…. off to take care of that right now actually.

Consider this del.icio.us’ed. ;)

My how to is up.

15 Will September 27, 2006 at 10:02 am

Good post Ross…the sad thing for me is that there isn’t much on that list that I like or eat regularly.

Can I add Goji Berries to the list? Goji Berries can allegedly increase sex drive, slow ageing, fight cancer and kill cellulite.

16 Ross September 27, 2006 at 10:18 am Twitter

Aye up Will

Hmmm, from your comment I take it you aren’t the person who found this page by googling ‘celery sex’. Not sure what that would entain but it sounds dicey!

Anyway, mate - just cook yourself up some Penne Arribiata to include chili, basil and garlic. Or make yourself a banana smoothie from time to time.

Cheers for pointing out the goji - could be a fine addition!

Mate - I’m diggin your site. I must admit, when I saw your URL I was expecting something far less useful and far more adsense riddled - but it isnt!

Consider yourself ’stumbled upon’, digg’d and del.icio.us’d - and added to my bloglines blogroll.

Have a great day
Ross

Good post indeed. When all that drugs on the market become obsolete, vegetables will do the job just fine. Also works for liver detox.

23 better sex March 13, 2007 at 10:14 pm

Nicest list of sex-foods I’ve seen. And some unlikely ones too. I’d have never thought of celery. And certainly cheaper than roses and champaign. haha.. I’ll be adding them to my salads more often! Thanks a bunch.

24 Britt March 20, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Just an FYI, couples who don’t use contraception have sex between 3 and 5 times more often than couples who do.

35 Harold October 13, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I have started the use of Garlic by first chopping it and soaking in water for sometime before drinking it. I hope it works for me because when I tried eating it raw I found out that garlic is very peppery hence I used the method above.

38 John November 12, 2008 at 5:52 am

I was just doing some research for a news article and stumbled on your site. Great blog!
I’ll consider myself lucky because I like everything on that list!

39 Sarah November 15, 2008 at 5:51 am

Hm, question– my libido is in OVERDRIVE and I eat about 80% of the foods on that list. I almost need to cut back I guess! However my husband’s libido has taken a turn for the worse but I can’t get him to eat any of that stuff, except maybe the occassional banana. He’s so picky! It’s been this way for over a year, and he’s young (29). Any ideas?

40 eles3d November 16, 2008 at 4:34 am

This is very very interesting. Just what I was hopin got find. I may be a female but I have always had a very high libido compared to my friends (mostly males).
I can’t wait to try these foods (foods that I have always seemed to love and eat) on my fiance (been with for over 5 years and the passions is just a flicker now…plus we had just miscarried this past week and well I am ready for some action and non stop attention).
Sorry if this is TMI…Thanks again for posting…

41 Ross November 16, 2008 at 5:20 am Twitter

Hi guys

Thanks for all of your comments over the past couple of weeks.

Sarah and eles3d I can honestly only say you’ve got to be open and communicative with your guy. Sometimes the very worst thing is that when the physical side of a relationship fades it snowballs - the less you do it the less likely you are to do it. You need to address this.

You’ve got to be open, communicative, sensitive, take things slow and easy but most of all talk to your fella about what you want this side of your relationship to look like. Find out what he wants this side of the relationship to look like too.

He’s likely to be feeling pretty sensitive to the issue and may be easily offended! Be aware of that.

Try and find out what this situation (the no sex) means to him, find out how he is interpreting it all and how it is making him feel. Tell him from your side too. From my own perspective I think there is often massive misunderstanding and miscommunication in this area and a lot of people could fall into the trap of blame, aggressiveness and oversensitivity when trying to talk it through. Don’t let that happen. No blame. None. The past is the past and it doesn’t mean the future has to be the same but you’ve both got to know how each of you are interpreting this situation.

I know I’m starting to sound like someone from cosmo or something but make it light hearted and fun too. Things may not fix up right away and it might take a while, but both get excited about making things better than they ever have been together, as a team.

Oh, and also, this is a big one - let him be the man and take the masculine role. I’ve no idea who you are or what you’re about but if you have the tendency to be the more masculine in the relationship - let him take this role right now. Just that one little change can make a massive difference with a lot of people.

I’m absolutely not qualified to dish out relationship support by the way, this is just my own opinion and a bit from my own experiences and the experiences of others I know.

Anyway, hope you get it sorted! After all this is a blog mostly about the alkaline diet and sex is highly alkalising!

Have a fantastic weekend and good luck! Let us all know how you get on! Oh and don’t worry about too much information - only 1500 people read this page per day…

Ross :)

Hi Ross, Can you pls tell if there is a different name for MACA in INDIA? can you help whether it might be known in india by some other name? I consume 2 petals/ pcs of raw garlic every morning along with hot water. Would you suggest some other way to eat garlic or is it okay to take it that way.
Also i am very over weight, it it okay if i eat almonds every day or will it lead to increase in fats?
Will await your answers.
Thanks and Regards,
Manish.

I’m peruvian living in Costa Rica, but never heard of the Maca tiil I went back to my country in year 2002, I say by accident a girlfriend gave me a bottle of Maca , she say her mother do not want to use it so I did try, and indeed it raise and boost my sexual drive, something that in the beginning was kind of a esceptic, believe me it works..!
None the less to mention my girlfriend was really happy for providing the Maca, now after 6 years and in a new relationship I taking Maca as never before confident it will produce again the same results as before.
Sorry for my english, but I hope all of you know what I mean
Maca power is a true

46 mike December 24, 2008 at 7:57 am

Friends,
As far as I know there is no magic bullets. I have tried maca,
avocado, celery, banana, oyster(better than what you have mentioned above), aboloni, seacucumber, ginseng, wild yam,
and other herbal medicine. … Thus, I
can safely say, I have tried more items then 98 % of people.
Thus, I can say the most important thing is that you have to
have good health first before you can have good libido. What you
read and hear is not good enough. By the way, maca is easy to
buy through internet, but don’t expect mirable. How I know it?
I have tried it more than three months.
