Do your bit for the environment in .8 seconds

blackleJust a quick post to highlight the excellent blackle.com. Blackle is Google blacked out. It is still all the functionality of google.com but black. Brilliant.

Apparently:

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002

Black Google has the potential to save 750 megawatt hours per year by simply not being white! This is brilliant in it’s simplicity. OK so the energy saving might not be HUGE, but the effort to make this tiny change in your life is so small - and it will all add up.

So, change your search home to blackle.com

“Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time”.’

Sure.
You do lose functionality though. You lose the Google Account integration, preference between safe/unsafe search, ads *cough*, and different search modes (map, froogle, images, news, videos, groups, blogs, … you know what I mean).

Instead, one could:
download firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Stylish:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

And then make google black:

Or dark blue:
http://userstyles.org/styles/843

In fact… be right back, I’ll go download that blue one :-D

I image blackle would be great for those who want to search anonymously, though :)

According to techlogg.com:
“But for the sake of fairness, here’s what we suggest – if you’re using a CRT monitor, you can save some power by using Blackle however it won’t be as much as its supporters will have you believe. We still think it’s around half.

..So after all that testing, we’re in a better position to say that anyone else that Blackle makes next to no difference, on average, with LCD monitors.”

And they do go on to talk about better ways to save power.
