A recently published study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (Vol 94, No 1 96-102, 2009) has provided further evidence that the consumption of and supplementation with alkaline minerals is essential for good health.
The objective of the study was to understand the effect of alkaline minerals (potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride) on bone health – specifically, the ability of these alkaline minerals to slow the bone resorption rate and calcium excretion.
The researchers measured the urinary N-telopeptide and calcium of the trial group (receiving the supplements) and control group every 24 hours for 3 months. And the result?
The participants who were taking the bicarbonate supplements had significant reductions in urinary N-telopeptide and calcium excretion when compared to the control group.
This means that when taking the alkaline minerals, bones remained stronger and healthier.
This was specific to the bicarbonate minerals (such as those seen in Dr Young’s pHour Salts) and not the potassium chloride, highlighting again that when it comes to supplementation you get what you pay for.
So there you have it. Further proof that alkaline minerals are essential for optimal health.

In addition to the supplementation, I am a big believer that people also need to stop poor dietary habits that cause minerals to be leached from the bones to begin with. Simple sugars and other processed foods that are devoid of minerals/nutrition are big culprits in the whole weak bone issues that people are having in older age nowadays.
As an aside, after I’ve had anything sweet, like some dates or a raw dessert – I’ll munch on some greens just to cleanse my palate. I also have heard that munching on the greens also prevents decay in the teeth (and actually helps to remineralize them). I don’t have data to back this up – but it makes sense to me.
Now – off to go munch on a few leaves of bok choy!
Great alkaline recipes and articles! This is one aspect of health that I think is very important–thanks for spending so much time on it!
