Having been a live blood analyst and alkaline diet nutritionist for over x years, Gareth Edwards has seen it all!
In this amazing blog post Gareth reveals some of the most inspirational transformations he has seen from his clients who have transitioned to the alkaline diet.
This is well worth a read – it is motivating and educational (as G always is) and it could be just the inspiration you need!
Alkaline Diet Inspirations! Amazing Alkaline Stories by Gareth Edwards!
The first half hour of my training with Dr. Young seemed to be dedicated to the definition of what a miracle is. The lesson in semantics (the study of the meaning of words) seemed a little irritating to me at the time! I had come to learn how to “do” microscopy!
I am now lucky enough to have witnessed many health transformations in people, that would probably fulfil the criteria, so (painstakingly!) laid out to us in the opening minutes of our (highly) intensive week. I’ve picked three that particularly stand out.
My Dad’s Inspirational Alkaline Story
Although it might seem a bit strange to be writing about my Dad, amongst the hundreds of people that I see, his case is particularly inspiring. Last year in March, at the age of 75, while having a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, it was suggested that he gave a urine sample. While his PSA was fine, the urine sample showed high blood sugar and he was diagnosed as diabetic. Further tests showed that he had high blood pressure (166/99) and elevated cholesterol.
It was recommended to him that he start on medication to resolve these issues. Metformin to resolve his blood sugar control, statins to bring his cholesterol down and blood pressure lowering medication was the suggested prescription. To my pleasant, I have to admit, surprise, he booked in to have a consultation with me, before embarking on this quite substantial pharmaceutical cocktail.
After discussing the situation with him, I showed him his blood and explained how pH balance was effecting what we were seeing. I then went on to explain to him how breakfast is one of the most important meals to make alkaline choices.
Most “conventional” choices at this time of the day (cereal, bread, jam, coffee, fruit juice) are acidifying. After a little negotiation, we agreed that he would start the day with sliced fresh vegetables on a slice of wholemeal bread. I also explained that he needed to cut down on his intake of animal protein, replacing meat with occasional fish and using vegetarian sources of protein where possible. Scrambled eggs on toast with Marmite (a favourite) had to be moved to the occasional “folder” and the Marmite (high in yeast) had to go! I also encouraged him to dramatically increase his intake of fresh (ideally raw) vegetables during the day, replacing vinegar with lemon juice.
His supplement package was …. straightforward. pHour salts on rising and three to four litres of Inner Light Supergreens and Prime pH during the day.
One of the most important factors was that I also encouraged him to increase his salt intake. Given that he had high blood pressure, many people would be surprised by this. Sodium is however a foundational alkalising mineral that our bodies use and need in abundance.
My Father tends to do things full on. At 75 he borrowed the neighbour’s bike, started cycling and decided to abstain from alcohol for a month too. Five weeks later his blood pressure was within the normal range for his age, his blood sugar was within the reference range too and his cholesterol was lower.
He was no longer diabetic! A year later his blood sugar is still normal and his blood pressure too. On top of that his weight has gone from 95.5 kilos to 85 kilos. All this has been achieved by changing diet and hydration and increasing exercise. He did not take any pharmaceuticals.
The Alkaline Transition of a Member of the British Sailing Team
Before I became a nutrition consultant I used to compete in sailing competitions. In 2006 one of my ex-sailing partners asked me if I would help him with his nutrition. Paul Brotherton was a member of the British sailing team at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and had been second in the selection trials in 2000 and 2004. Paul is an incredibly agile and athletic guy, but in 2006 he was carrying more weight than he wanted and his normal very high endurance (80+ press ups), was waning (less than 20 press ups).
He already knew that he was probably eating a bit too much junk, but crucially he was fuelling his body on a high carbohydrate intake. I explained to him that in order to make healthy blood, which in turn would give him more energy, he needed to dramatically increase his intake of green plant foods. He wasn’t keen on green powders, but he was happy to eat more. I suggested that the best way to get a really good “hit” of magic greens was to buy a juice machine and stuff cucumbers, celery and leafy greens into it. He thought it sounded like a load of hassle, but I reassured him that the results would definitely justify the effort.
Two months later, having just won a prestigious sailing event, he rang me delighted. I’ve lost six kilos and I’m back up to 80 press ups! Not a man to do anything by halves he had been a little surprised when he had observed that his high green diet had resulted in “the waste matter” from his body turning green!
That was fantastic, but just as exciting was the fact that Paul used this new found awareness when he became the couch for Sarah’s Ayton and Webb and Pippa Wilson in their bid to represent Great Britain at the Olympics in China. The team managed to beat off very strong competition to be selected and entered the Olympic regatta ranked number 1 in the World. Part of the Challenge of sailing in China was the need to be light (for light winds) but still incredibly agile and strong. When I met the ladies just after they’d been to Buckingham Palace to receive their medals for winning Gold in China, Sarah told me that on one occasion they’d actually cleared a supermarket out of it’s entire stock of green vegetables on one shopping trip!
One Of My Patient’s Inspirational Alkaline Story
These people all had powerful incentives to make changes and follow what may seem like an unconventional path. One of my recent patient’s cases really does however illustrate how everybody can benefit from shifting the pH of their body fluids and eating more green vegetables and grasses. Taryn came to see me on 15th December last year. She was really trying to eat healthily (mainly vegetarian with some fish), but was suddenly experiencing a dramatic drop in energy. Here (with her agreement) is what she wrote to me last month:
Thanks for all the info. Things have been going really well. I did have a mild headache last week, but it was only for a few hours, so they’re definitely improving. I’m off to Australia for Easter so I will probably see the acupuncturist when I get back.
I’ve been wearing the q-link for about 5 days now and I do feel more energetic….but I’ve been eating really well too, so who knows! On Sunday I was up at 7.30am and was completely energetic until 11pm. I really can’t remember feeling that much energy so steadily before. How can I imagine living any other way now?!!
I’ve bought lots of books (on your recommendations) and have been devouring them along with my greens. I’ve got a dehydrator now too, which I’m starting to experiment with.
Overall, my favourite thing is waking up and feeling energetic immediately….and if not, as soon as I have my green juice for breakfast my cells feel alive! I’m so much more in tune with how food affects my body now and have even got a new lunchbox which I take to school everyday. I bring my own avocado or sprouts with seeds, salt and homemade dressing. My lunches are delicious now!
Paul’s also completely converted to the new way of eating and we’ve cleared out all our acidic foods from our kitchen. He’s been advising all of his friends too! He plays every Sunday afternoon at the Coq d’Agent in Bank, with a bass and sax.
I’d really love to have a re-check of my blood to see a before and after sometime soon. Let me know if you think it would be worth doing before Easter or when I get back from Oz.
Thanks again for all your brilliant advice. Paul and I are so grateful for meeting you and we are always recommending you to our friends and colleagues.
Kind regards,
Taryn
With the election imminent in the UK it would be nice to think that a new era of health and well being maybe about to dawn.

Hi there,
Admittedly an all round healthy diet is important and beneficial to heath in lots of ways, but why can’t a person simply take sodium bicarbonate to alkalise their system when sodium bicarbonate it a natural product produced by the body in large amounts ( and the very same substance discharged by the pancreas to neutralize stomach acid HCL ). If hypertension was deemed as issue then potassium bicarbonate could be substituted for the sodium bicarbonate, or better still a mixture of the two.
Regards
Chris
I love reading your blog and have ordered various things from your website, however, I’m confused. I read lots of health, nutrition/diet books, but confusion arises when high protein diets also claim similar things about being able to cure type 2 diabetes, improve blood pressure, cholesterol etc. There is then metabolic typing, which believes that all bodies are unique, ie some bodies do better on protein, others on carbs, etc. I just wondered what your view was on this as obviously a high protein diet would surely make the body very acidic, however, lots of people still do well on it with very few greens/veggies. Maybe I’ve read too many books!!! Sorry, but I just wondered what your thoughts were.
