Although it is our cheapest source of water, tap water is not ideal. Ideally, the water you should drink should have the following profile:
- pH of above 8, and ideally pH 9.5
- An negative ORP of at least -100
- Clean and free of contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, fluoride, chlorine etc.
Tap water fails on all three points.
The Problem With Tap Water
Let me expand on the three points above and then I will go a little more into the detail of why I no longer accept tap water. Remember, as you read this, that water is something that you should be drinking 2-4+ litres of per day. As you are putting so much volume through your body you really should make sure that it is health-giving and not damaging to your body.
The quality of your water is the biggest determinant of your health.
Insufficient pH Level
Tap water, in most parts of the UK, Australia, Europe and the USA is between 6.8-7.2. This is not great. It will do absolutely nothing to help buffer the excess acidity in your cells and will potentially contruibute to the build up of acids in your body. Remember, the pH scale is logarithmic meaning pH 8 is 100x more alkaline than pH 7 and pH 9 is 1000x more alkaline. So increasing the pH of your water by just one point on the pH scale can make a HUGE difference to your health.
To compare, ionized water can be set to whatever pH level you like up to around pH 12.5. I would never recommend drinking anything with a pH of over 9.5 – but with an ionizer you can set the water level to give you pH 9.5 all day, every day, which will dramatically increase the alkaline buffers in your body and help neutralise excess acids. This is a stark contrast to the lifeless pH 7 tap water.
Summary: tap water gives you a pH of around 7, which will certainly not contribute to your health. You should be aiming for a pH of at least 8. Ionized water gives you pH 9.5.
Zero Antioxidant Content – In Fact, Tap Water is Unhealthy Oxidizing Water
I don’t want to get bogged down in science, but – I need to explain this to you. All liquids can be measured for their antioxidant content. The standardised measure for the antioxidants in liquids is Oxidation Reduction Potential (or redox) – shortened to ORP. With ORP, the lower the number the more antioxidants are present in the liquid.
To give this some perspective, tap water often has an ORP of between +350 and +500. I have never seen it below +125. Alkaline, ionized water from a Chanson Ionizer has an ORP of between -250 and -450, and can get up to -800 in some areas.
The fact that tap water has an ORP that is positive means that it is actually robbing you of health whenever you drink it. Positive ORP means the water is oxidizing (aging) to your body.
Summary: tap water has a positive ORP which means it is oxidising to the body. All the hard work you do to eat those antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables is being undone by the positive OPR of tap water! Ionized water, on the other hand is high in antioxidants – in fact, this is probably the most impressive benefit of ionized water. Imagine drinking 3-4 litres of water that has more antioxidants than green tea – every day! Imagine how great you’ll feel!
Tap Water Contains Heavy Metals, Pesticides, Chemicals…And It’s Only Getting Worse
Tap water is known to contain several substances that really should be filtered from our drinking water. Heavy metals such as mercury, toxins such as pesticides and the chemicals that water plants add such as excessive fluoride and chlorine mean that tap water is really not ideal.
In the USA, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has found more than 80 contaminants in drinking water. In our highly industrialised world we are now living in, over 70,000 chemicals are used regularly every day and over 1,000 new ones are developed every year. These chemicals ultimately end up in our water supply. And the more toxic our drinking water supply becomes, the more chemicals the treatment plants add (generally fluoride and chlorine).
Chlorine levels in tap water have increased dramatically in the past few years to protect against bacteria and e-coli outbreaks. “Safe” chlorine levels are approximately 0.5 ppm (parts per million), whereas current levels stand around 2.0-4.0 ppm. This is clearly not heading in the right direction & you really have to filter your drinking water.
Summary: tap water is filled with all manner of nasties. You really have to filter it. Conventional filters will do an OK job of moving you in the right direction and I recommend that you, at the very least, get some form of filter for your tap water.
