You all know how important it is to stay hydrated right? Of course you do. It is THE most important part of the alkaline diet and no matter what your health goal – hydration will be at the core of it.
However, “how to stay hydrated” is always at the top of most peoples biggest questions/hurdles when trying to get healthy. It is a combination of not enjoying plain water and/or simply not REMEMBERING to drink enough. People often tell me that drinking 3-4 litres is too hard and they can’t do it – but I think that if you break it down to: 3 litres divided by 15 waking hours…drinking 200ml per hour is not that hard…so it really is remembering to drink enough AND making it enjoyable.
7 Steps to Alkaline Hydration
Step One: Carry a Big Bottle
This is the best tip – because it makes sure you always have your water on you to sip. I personally like to have a big 1 litre bottle at all times and when I do this I always drink my 4.2 litres! Really simple, but SO effective. How many times are you sat at your desk, thirsty as hell, thinking – when I finish this task I’ll go get a water…and then 2 hours later you’re still sat there thirsty?
Step Two: Set a Reminder
This isn’t something you will have to do forever, but I recommend you set an hour reminder on your phone or watch to beep and remind you to have a big gulp or a glass of water every hour. It is amazing how often you suddenly realise it is lunchtime and you’ve not really had anything to drink!
Step Three: Substitute
For every other drink you go to have, be it a tea, coffee or juice – substitute in water. You will be surprised at a) how good it
makes you feel and b) how much of a pat on the back you can give yourself afterwards. This simple tip can lead to some really good,
positive reinforcement that yes, you can say no and it makes you even more healthy!
Step Four: Always Have Water At Your Desk
Building on Step One – simply having a bottle at your desk at all times means that when you do remember you can tuck straight into it, rather than thinking “oh yes, water, now let me just finish this email first”. When I’m working away from home I personally like to fill my Alkaline Water Jug and have that and a glass on my desk at all times.
Step Five: The Power of Tea!
Herbal teas are alkaline! Mostly. You only really have to avoid green and white tea and the rest are caffeine free and alkaline. I find this is a great way to beat the boredom of plain water and it gives me at least a litre of hydration per day. My favourites are peppermint, Rooibos, caffeine-free chai, ginger and orange. Delicious hot or cold!
Step Six: Flavour!
Water is water and it’s pretty dull. That’s ok. Try to see hydration as a source of health and energy rather than a source of flavour. However, remember – you can add lemon, mint, lime, grapefruit…all manner of fresh stuff added in to make water more enjoyable. I’m personally loving lime and mint at the moment. Mint grows like nothing else in the garden too – so you can get it in abundance for free (or in a pot if you’re living in a unit). Genius.
Step Seven: Know your Outcome and Plan your Route to Success
Set goals. Write them down. Track your progress. Read your goals aloud day and night. Honestly, being hydrated is THE most important part of any health goal and will get you a long way towards where you want to be, whether that is weight loss, weight gain, muscle growth, more energy, better digestion, better skin……

ROSS,
I drink 6 to 8 liters of water every day the test still come acidotic, 5 to 5.5, my moth is bitter most of the time if I eat or use garlic or onion, my moths smell terrrible very bad breath, I use clorofile a lots of parsley nothing helo I though drinking a lots of water might help but nothing, my liver funtion it is good, so I ma not sure what to do, I use a lots of lemon juice nothing help Do you have any suggstions? I will really appreciate your help.

What´s wrong with green tea? As much as I know, the orientals drink it a lot, and they have no cancer problems like us, from America and Europe.
All citric fruits, but lemmons, are acidic.
I haven´t been reading all your messages, but, according to the comment of “Sossy, oktober 28″, you say that citric fruits are alkaline!!!

Green tea is high in caffeine and so is acid-forming. You cannot draw a massive conclusion that race A is healthy and they drink green tea so it must be healthy – there are about a billion other variables at play.
Regarding citric fruit – it is not the citric that is the important part, it is the sugar content. i.e. the citric fruits lemons, limes, grapefruits – are alkaline (they have no sugar), but oranges, tangello etc are acid-forming as they’re full of sugar.

Definitely more healthy than sprite, but the carbonation makes it a little acid-forming. Make sure you have normal water too as part of your overall hydration.

Hi Ross, thank you for sending me your information .I am confused you say lemon and citric fruits are alkaline ,i find it so acidic ,it makes me sick most of the times .green veggies are high in oxalate most of them.i am 55 and have kidney stones since my childhood ,my stomach is extremely sensitive to acidity, i can’t live without daily naxium ,i have hiatal hernia (acid reflux) .but i am really interested in this alkaline diet . looking forward your reply. If because of a pre-existing condition you’re finding certain foods to be painful to digest, stay away until you’re feeling better and then slowly re-introduce.

I want to ask about the alkaline water is to use it just along and after 45 to 1 hour to eat or drink or alse? and can we add lemon or grapefriut in the alkaline water?

Hey Ross,
One other little tip to keep you on schedule thru the day. Put 8 (or whatever number is appropriate to represent how many glasses, liters, etc you need to drink) pennies in your pocket. As you finish a glass/liter/etc, transfer 1 penny to the other pocket.
By the end of the day, the original pocket should be empty.
And for everyone asking about carbonation, CO2 is acid waste when it comes from our body. It would therefore be the same when it’s bubbled into our water.

how do you get on when travelling as food in airports are usually snacks/cakes with loads of sugar or sandwiches and I try to avoid wheat, meat and dairy so have to go hungry or eat the sugary foods. as you travel a lot what do you eat? any tips for next time I go on holiday?

It doesn’t totally ruin it and I believe everything in moderation is fine – especially when first starting out. The great thing is – the more alkaline/ balanced/ healthy you get, the less you’ll even want to have things like coffee – so the transition gets easier and easier.

Thanks for the information – its well laid out. The comment I would make is that people should flavour their water with fresh herbs and not buy water that is already flavoured. The latter is so acidic for the body and defeats the object of exercise.

I know it has been done for centuries but you should not add lemon
to teas. Teas have aluminum and Fluoride and they both get past
the brain barrier and this process is accelerated when when lemon
is added to the tea and can lead to Alzheimer’s Disease. White tea has the the smallest amount.

I’d be grateful if anyone could tell of any brands of non-caffine chai in Australia and where they may be available. My hubby loves chai but gets nasty headaches from the regular caffine varieties.
There is a brand called Organic India you can get in Australia – I just finished a box and will be getting more today (from the Elwood General Store – great organic shop).
The one I love is their Organic Red Chai Massala.

I was under the impression that ioniozed water would oxidise if stored in a plasticc bottle and loose its negative ORP dramatically.
Also a squeese of lemon in warm ionised water in the morning. Would the lemon turn the this waterAcidic?

The lemon adds to the alk effect once consumed, but with ionized water this isn’t necessary so the lemon really becomes just for flavour.
Plastic bottle is fine as long as it is BPA free – it is the stainless steel or aluminium bottles that remove the ORP. Glass is best…

Another weird thing! Drinking green juice actually gives you a sense of being thirsty which I never had before.

First of all, I just want to tell you what a HUGE impact you have had on me. Enormously helpful!!
I actually have a question. I have worked very hard to follow your advice (and it’s made a huge difference), but I realized after reading this article that as summer turned to fall I have been drinking less straight water and more sodium free seltzer water. I haven’t given it a second thought, figuring its just carbonated water. I often mix it with fresh grapefruit juice or pressed apple juice. Is there any reason that sodium free seltzer water would NOT be a good thing?
