I had a question via email last week, which I thought would make a useful little post for everyone else out there:
Hi there,
I take wheatgrass juice regularly and have always chased it with carrot juice, what is your opinion of chasing with fresh squeezed orange juice ?
Thanks
My answer then and there was this:
Hi
I would not be too concerned with chasing it with orange or carrot juice (or a mixture of both!) but I would be mindful of the sugar content of the orange juice. It depends on quantities. If you are talking a wheatgrass shot, followed by a similar quantity of orange juice than I am sure that would be fine. However, if you are talking a glass of orange juice then I would be careful and mindful of the amount of sugar contained within this drink.
Is there another drink you could follow it with? Perhaps try following it with a big gulp of water as the taste of the wheatgrass would go away pretty quickly. If you tried chasing it with nothing for a while I am pretty sure you could get used to the taste too!
I really wouldn’t lose too much sleep over it, but it would be great if you could find something that does not contain sugar.
I hope this helps
However, there are a couple of other things I would like to add and a couple of other suggestions I would like to make:
- Firstly, if you absolutely must follow up your wheatgrass shot with something sweet, try to make sure it is something you have juiced yourself. I went to a talk with the CEO of Nudie Juices the other day and he described the process by which cartoned juices were made and what reconstituted juice pulp was. Needless to say, it was not pretty and that there is almost zero nutritional value in cartoned/packaged juices.
- Wheatgrass will not always taste as bad as it seems right now - your pallette will get used to its subtle sweetness. Why not try washing it down with a few big gulps of filtered water and then having a nice cup of herbal tea?
- Carrot juice will obviously be preferable to orange juice although they are both fairly high in sugar
I have never had a problem with the taste of wheatgrass or green drinks of any kind really, so I am one of the lucky ones. However, I know people who really thought they hated it (especially fresh veg juices), but over time have actually grown to love these tastes. Stick it out! Or until then, be brave (or take wheatgrass capsules ;))
