The Indie Virus

March 23rd, 2006 · No Comments

OK, since I am a fledgling blogger, with a fledgling blog in the big, bad blogosphere - posts that I stumble upon like this really pique my interest.

The Indie Virus - created by Chris Pearson of pearsonified.com - has started a buzz around the middle-to-lower grounds of the blogosphere. Similar to John Scott, Chris is keen to break some of the attention away from the A-List of bloggers (see Technorati Top 100) and give a little love to the rest of the active blogosphere.

The notion, I guess, comes from Mike Grehan’s excellent article, Filthy Linking Rich which proffers that as with money, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. In the world of blogs, the Top 100 get the most links, comments, PR and attention just by virtue of being the top 100 blogs. The more time goes on, the harder this core will be to break into and the further and further the rest of the blogging world we be from them.

So, the Indie Virus proposes this:

All you’ve got to do is link to lesser known blogs from within a post (or two, or eleventeen), but you have to make sure that the anchor text of your link is The Indie Virus. This is critical, because in order to track the experiment, I’ll be searching for the phrase “The indie Virus” on common engines like Technorati, Google, and Yahoo! Oh, and also, make sure that you link directly to a post WITH A TRACKBACK and not to the site itself - it speaks louder!

I love this idea because it encourages people to read blogs they wouldnt normally have read and get in touch with new and random people. That is what blogging is all about, but this notion has been lost a little bit in recent times.

So here is my sneezeathon: first up for some hardcore sneez-idge is Indie Virus. To Diet Girl, she is just too funny and if you havent ever caught her blog then you have got a good eight hours of reading ahead of you! (Couldn’t trackback as I couldnt find a trackback URL). Another great, but very new blog I have just found is the Indie Virus Fat Bitch Blog - she doesn’t mince her words and her determination is contageous. Away from health and diet type things, I also want to sneeze on a couple of clever guys and gals out there in marketing (which is my other love). Indie Virus to ‘whats your brand mantra’ - its getting some sneezidge too for being fresh and to the point!

Finally, The Indie Virus fan John Scott gets a mention for being the blogger who bought this to my attention. Cheers John. Oh and obvoiusly The Indie Virus creator Pearsonified have to be sneezed upon for the great idea!

Cheers and thanks for your patience!
