A study involving over 8,000 people aged 30-60 over a 25-year time period has found that AT LEAST a quarter of long-term smokers WILL develop an incurable lung condition called ‘chronic obstructive pulmonary disease’ (COPD).
Of the 8k people involved in the study, 5280 were smokers, 1513 were non-smokers and 1252 were ex-smokers. At the end of the 25-years, the study revealed that at least a quarter of the participants who did not have any of the initial symptoms of COPD had developed ‘clinically significant’ symptoms while approximately 40% had developed ’some’ signs of the condition.

Here is another reason to swap your coke for water/herbal tea/fresh juice etc - reasearch from Boston’s Framingham Osteoperosis Study has found that women who drink cola on a daily basis had an average 5% reduction in bone mass density. This 5% reduction is enough of a difference to mean that a break or fracture is much more likely than not.
Let’s face it, the body works to very tight boundaries. If our blood pH drops below 6.8 or rises above 7.8, we die! If our body temperature rises by just 5 degrees we are almost certain to die and at 7 degrees hotter death is a certainty.

Firstly, many apologies for the week delay in bringing you #24. My excuse is valid - I was busy bustin’ my ass to write the UPW Momentum workbook - yep, all 84 pages of it - in time for when everyone got home from UPW on Monday afternoon. So there. That’s why.
BUT - I still bookmarked all of my favourite posts and so here they are, intertwangled with #25:
- Straight up - Priscilla at B4B gives us 33 healthy ways that the body responds to rebounding. And if anyone knows about rebounding it’s Priscilla. After all, she’s bounced over a MILLION times.

A new report compiled by Choice Magazine has provided the damning verdict that the majority of so-called healthy breakfast/snack bars are actually less healthy than a Mars bar, or, in some cases - TWO RASHERS OF FRIED BACON!
I have spoken before about this type of hoodwinking that the food manufacturers get away with and I have even laid a large proportion of the blame for the worldwide obesity crisis at their doorstep - and this provides some concrete proof.

Everyone harps on about how many spoons of sugar is in each can of Coke, but what about other foods…? I was just catching up on a few blogs that I had left untouched on my bloglines account for a while and this one from Seth Godin stood out.
Normally I read Seth for his witty and thought-provoking marketing insights - but this one spilt over into my health obsession too!
Seth highlights that at Starbucks:
the Large Java Frappuccino has 29 packets of sugar and the equivalent of 11 creamers in it. In one, not in a dozen.

According to The Scotsman - Scottish Ministers are preparing to make the legal age for buying tobacco 18 - but will this make much difference?
This move comes hot on the heels of Scotland becoming one of the first countries to ban smoking in public places, and I think it is great that they are taking bold steps towards improving their nation’s health - however, I am not sure that this change will have the same impact.

Hello all. So, week number 20 is upon us!
- Gym Bunny: is just 45 days away from the Berlin Marathon! Be sure to head on over there and give her some support! (although you have to have signed up to blogger to post comments unfortunately!)
- Diet Girl: posts about a BBC show that was aired a few days ago called Slimmer Winners. You have to check this out, but it is a fairly upsetting read! It discusses how out of 70 successful slimmers less than half managed to keep their weight at that level. It does, however, go to show the importance of setting goals and having a vision - as if your goal is just to lose the weight - what happens next?

Here goes - quickfire linkage!
- Cancer Blog: are publicising the story of David Mise, a 20-year old cancer patient who is offering advertising space on his bald head to raise money to pay for continuing treatments! Good on yer David! Anyway, eBay originally forced him to pull his initial auction - so Cancer Blog picked up on it and promoted his revised auction. We’re doing likewise: here it is. Bid now and bid generously!
- Steve: blogs about how finding training buddies (for his exercise fo choice - cycling) has really helped him and gotten him out on the road a lot more.

Hi all
Apologies - this week there only seems to be a couple of posts sandwiched in between THDBR’s. My only excuse is that I have got a fair few good posts that are in a 3/4 finished state that will all appear at once!
Anyway, these are the posts that have given me that warm fuzzy bloggy feeling this week:
- First up - Moe - gives us the rundown on her thoughts about the state of obesity and its related health risks. You can tell that this is one of those write at random straight from the heart kinda posts - which are always the best in my opinion.

Hello! I am very excited about the THDBR this week as I have found loads of new blogs lately! Well, they are not new per se, but they are new to me. If you have got a blog that has never been featured - let me know in the comments as I am always looking for new blogs and generally do not have enough time in the day to keep on looking!
So here is the THDBR #17:
- Nikki: blogs about how it doesnt hurt to try new things!

Issue #16
After a slight pause I am now back from holidays and back on the blogging quest!
- Jim: blogs a subject close to my heart - the apparent heartless nature of food manufacturers and their quest to sell as much as possible regardless of our health and wellbeing. As ever with posts on diet-blog.com, the comments are almost as useful as the post!
- Holly: talks about how important it is to have supportive people around you when you are making changes in your life. I agree wholeheartedly with this post - and it follows on from the thinking about creating a supporting peer group and not letting anyone around you drag you down or belittle your efforts.

OK - third time lucky. I am working on a laptop which is something I do not normally do and I keep hitting the backspace key, which is making my browser go back one page. And with Wordpress this immediately deletes my post.
So for the THIRD time, here is the THDBR,
- Karen: gives a very informative post about the health benefits of maca (natures viagra - oo-er!). She even finishes off with a tasty looking maca recipe! This is what blogging is all about!
