There seemed to be a lot of hype but no real danger.  At the time of blogging back in July, at the very height of the scare, when the flu was at it&#8217;s most dangerous &#8211; 29 people had died of it in three months.  On average, in a normal year 2,500 people will have died from normal flu in that month.  You see my point.</p>
<p>Anyway, where my suspicion stopped at debunking the gross over-dramatised media hype (selling papers is, of course their #1 priorty, no matter how truthful it is, and yes the Guardian, Independent, Times were as guilty as the Sun and the Mail) &#8211; Dr Mercola saw something very serious going on beneath the surface.  </p>
<p>He took aim at the US government with highly credible statistics and facts and he is doing an <b>amazing</b> job of exposing the lies and greed that sits behind swine flu.  </p>

In our lounge, in our kitchen and in our bedroom.  In our pocket and on our lap.  </p>
<p>Every single electrical appliance in our lives is exposing our body to harmful electromagnetic radiation.  And even those that we don&#8217;t have control over such as power lines, wiring in buildings, and a whole heap of other technologies such as wireless internet that are so prevalent in our modern lives are all potentially harmful to our health.   </p>
<p>Potentially harmful electical appliances are everywhere, and more and more research is beginning to show that when we continually expose ourselves to these frequencies we are seriously putting ourselves at risk!</p>
<p>Some frequencies are stronger than other (the frequency of a laptop and mobile phone is the same as a microwave when it cooks your food &#8211; yes, that&#8217;s right, the thing you put up to your ear and the thing you put on top of your sexual organs is slowly cooking you) and some are more in our control than others, but researching this article and the things I have been told lately have really started to make me think about the way I live my life and the way my home and office are set up!  </p>
<h2>What the World&#8217;s Longest &#038; Largest Mobile Phone Study Found&#8230;</h2>
<p>During  the 1990&#8242;s the scientist, research director, and consultant was hired by the US Cell Phone Industry to investigate the safety of using mobile phones with the hope of finding that using mobiles was safe and not dangerous to the health of the public.  They could not have ever predicted what he would find and the impact it could have.  </p>
<p>After six years of continual research, Carlos&#8217; research could not find any evidence to support the safety of mobile phones and in fact found a direct link between mobile phone use and cancer.  He summarised:</p>
<blockquote><p>The big picture is disturbingly clear. There is a definite risk that the radiation plume that emanates from a cell phone antenna can cause cancer and other health problems. It is a risk that affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. It is a risk that must be seen and understood by all who use cell phones so they can take all the appropriate and available steps to protect themselves and especially to protect young children whose skulls are still growing and who are the most vulnerable to the risks of radiation .&#8221; -Dr. George Carlo</p></blockquote>
<p>He has most recently stated that epidemiological studies prove that every year there are between 30-50k new cases of brain and eye cancer atrributable to mobile phone use.  Just mobile phone use.   By the year 2010 that number is going to have risen to nearly 500k cases.  </p>
<p>This is scary stuff.</p>
<p>And it is proven.  Studies by Danish scientists have shown that 20 &#8211; 80% of the electromagnetic radiation generated by mobile phones (depending on the make) is absorbed directly into the brain of the user. A few minutes exposure to cell phone type radiation can transform a 5% active cancer into a 95% active cancer.</p>
<p><b>And that is not all</b></p>
<p>Other dangers include wireless internet, microwave use, hairdryers, hair straighteners, wireless home phones, alarm clocks by our bed, electric blankets and any big number of plugs that are near where we spend a lot of our time (for instance under the computer desk, behind the tv etc.).</p>
<p>To put it in technical terms, 2.5mG is the generally accepted limit of ELF magnetic field (EMF) exposure, but the average hair dryer, vacuum cleaner or electric can opener that we use, EMITS AN AMAZING 300mG or more.  This is the type of level of EMF we are being continuously exposed to.  Some hairdryers even go as high as 700mG and there has been continual proven links between hair dryer use and leukemia.  In fact, this link was reported in the US Government report, NIH98-3981 (pages 180 &#038; 182) for the National Institute for Health (NIH), in August of 1998. This report was prepared under a $65 million dollar allocation by the U.S. Congress under the EMF RAPID Program.  This is also proven in studies by the University of Southern California and the National Cancer Institute who have also linked children&#8217;s leukemia to hair dryers. </p>
<p>Wireless internet is something else that has made me think.  I&#8217;ve been slightly concerned about it lately and wondering if it was potentially harmful and my research has led to to believe that, yes it is!</p>
<p>The magazine Eco-Test (the eco equivalent of the UK &#8220;Which?&#8221; magazine] tested workstations in the juristic library in Göttingen, Germany and found a peak value of 23,000 µWatt/m2. The current official guideline in Germany [and in the UK] is 10 µWatt/m2.  And while it would be possible to argue that official guidelines say wireless is safe &#8211; the legal basis for this, the Electromagnetic Fields Ordinance, was last updated in 1996!  Before wireless was publicly available!   </p>
<p>The ECOLOG Institute in Hanover has also produced a science review of more than 220 peer reviewed and published studies of the various health effects of electromagnetic fields and confirmed, on a scientific basis, that proximity to wireless networks caused, at least, headaches, high blood pressure, lack of concentration, effects on brain function, the onset of allergies (!) and more.  </p>
<p>The alarm clock that sits next to your head all night, every night also emits higher than safe levels of EMF.  </p>
<p>I am not saying all of this to scare you into living in a mud hut in a field in Scotland. <strong> But what I am saying is that the majority of us have been living unaware of the dangers we are putting ourselves under.  </strong></p>
<h3>But What Can We Do About It?</h3>
<p>Like all of you, I live in (and love) the modern world.  I work on computers all day, I am often on wireless in my many random cafes (offices) around Australia and England.  I love to watch the football and Location, Location, Location (why is it so addictive?!).  I use a juicer, a blender and an ionizer.  I do have a mobile phone and I regularly fly.  </p>
<p>But I have taken a few dramatic steps to minimise my risk and put me in the safe zone as much as possible.  Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I&#8217;m not perfect (I never am), but I think I&#8217;ve done a lot to improve my chances and reduce my time in what I lovingly call &#8216;the cooking zone&#8217;.  </p>
<p>Here are the top ten things I have done or changed in my life that I think each and every one of you can do too:</p>
<p><b>My Top Ten Ways to Reduce EMF</b></p>
<ol>
<li><b>Throw Away Your Microwave:</b> there is no place in life for a microwave.  Stop being lazy.  Not only do microwaves kill any traces of nutrition from your food, increase the carcinogenic effect of everything they cook and make all food taste like s**t, but they also cook you.  Being anywhere <em>near</em> a microwave is crazy.   Get rid of it, warm your food on the stove and cut this unnecessary danger out of your life.  I have literally NEVER missed having one.  </li>
<li><b>Put Your Alarm Clock On The Other Side of The Room:</b> having this source of dangerous EMFs right by your head all night every night is just crazy too.  Move it well away from your bed and you get the added bonus of HAVING to get up when your alarm goes off.  Genius!</li>
<li><b>No Mobile Phone in the Bedroom:</b> Similarly, this is crazy. Mobiles are <em>always</em> searching for a signal, even when off.  You don&#8217;t need this by you while you sleep.  I can&#8217;t believe I used to go to sleep with my phone ON, and UNDER MY PILLOW.  Madness.  Please never, never do this.</li>
<li><b>Go Wired:</b> There is just no need to have wireless at home.  The day I switched to wired I breathed a sigh of relief.  It was actually quite weird getting rid of my fandangled wireless modem and having to specifically get a wired capable modem (the shop only had one!) and then buy lots of nice long ethernet cable, but man it felt good!  You don&#8217;t have to put you and your family at this risk.</li>
<li><b>Dry Natural:</b> I&#8217;ve never been a hair dryer user really (sometimes to warm up on a cold day when I was a wee lad) but I am quite sure you can live without hovering this absurdly unsafe implement around your head for 10 minutes every day.  Just say no.</li>
<li><b>I Know It Is Called A Laptop, But&#8230;:</b> please don&#8217;t put it on your lap.  You know when you have your laptop on your lap and you get all hot.  That is your genitals cooking.  Seriously.  At the same frequency as a microwave.  I know.</li>
<li><b>Brush Your Teeth Using The Mechanical Wonder Of Your Hands:</b> please ditch the electric toothbrush.  Putting it in your mouth (and even worse, around your metal <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2406/mercury-fillings-mercury-amalgam-removalthe-answers">mercury fillings</a>) is just plain wrong.  Your hands can jig about, why are we so lazy that we need an appliance to move very slightly for us?</li>
<li><b>Switch to Low EMF Appliances Where You Can:</b> sites like <a href="http://www.lowemf.com/">lowemf.com</a> sell a range of low EMF products to replace some of the more dangerous in the home.  Another great site is Tom&#8217;s Gadgets which sells EMF detection devices so you can test areas of your home and make improvements</li>
<li><b><a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2406/mercury-fillings-mercury-amalgam-removalthe-answers">Get Your Mercury Fillings Replaced</a>:</b> I&#8217;m pretty sure that having conductors in your mouth is a bad idea.  Plus they&#8217;re just plan toxic.

<li><b>Protect Yourself:</b> finally, take steps to protect yourself no matter where you are.  You can&#8217;t always control your surroundings and sometimes you are exposed without knowing it.  For instance, aeroplanes are dreadful for having high EMF but we can&#8217;t avoid this.  I always have a <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/item--Q-LINK-NEW-Q-in-White--QLINK_NEWQ.html">Q-Link on me no matter where I go</a>.  It protects your whole body from EMFs and I really think it makes a massive difference.

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2009/03/25/weight-loss-tip-from-oprahhonestly-its-good/">Weight Loss Tip from Oprah&#8230;Honestly It&#8217;s Good!</a></p><p></p><p>Crikey, in the last two months I&#8217;ve now actually used material from both Oprah and Dr Phil.  This is pure coincidence!  Don&#8217;t be fooled into thinking I just watch trashy telly all day &#8211; it&#8217;s just not true!</p>
<p>The fact is, whenever anything to do with dieting or weight loss is on the radio or tv it piques my interest.  Not only because, like all y&#8217;all, I like a good success story, but also because I am interested to hear how different people have achieved results.</p>
<p>Anyway, this was the story of Stacey Halprin (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Winning-After-Losing-Weight-Lost-Forever/dp/0446580392">here&#8217;s her book</a>) who lost over 400lbs (that is approx over 3x me!).  </p>
<p>The tip was this:</p>
<p class="alert">When you are dieting, if you have a mishap <b>don&#8217;t just write off the whole day and think &#8216;well I&#8217;ve stuffed today up, I&#8217;ll start again tomorrow&#8217;</b> &#8211; just get straight back onto it!  If you&#8217;ve had a splurge lunch then just get back on and have a normal dinner.  Don&#8217;t go and have a bad dinner and put things off!</p>
<p>The main point here is:</p>
<ul>
<li>Don&#8217;t beat yourself up &#8211; nobody is perfect all of the time</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t then go and overcompensate and starve yourself at your next meal &#8211; this will probably just lead to a vicious cycle</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t give up on that day &#8211; just get back to normal with your next meal or snack!</li>
</ul>
<p>As Stacey rightly points out &#8211; this simple distinction could be the difference between winning and losing.  </p>
<p>I have to say, I agree.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2009/01/20/what-antioxidants-really-do-and-easy-ways-to-get-enough/">What Antioxidants REALLY Do (and easy ways to get enough)!</a></p><p></p><p><img src="http://www.energiseforlife.com/images/blogimages/antioxidants.jpg" alt="lovely antioxidants" class="alignright"/><span class="drop_cap">E</span>verybody has heard of antioxidants, everybody knows that are good for them and it feels like every food and drink product under the sun claims to have them. </p>
<p>But what are antioxidants and why are they so important?  Oh, and what is the easiest, and best way to make sure we get enough!</p>
<h3>Antioxidants: The Basics</h3>
<p>Antioxidants literally do what they say on the tin, they prevent oxidation reactions in the body.  They are anti-oxidising.  </p>
<p><em>And why is this important? </em> Because oxidation reactions in the body produce &#8216;free radicals&#8217; which are serious cell damagers and the cause of many diseases and aging.  In fact, oxidative stress has been shown to be pivotal in the onset of many diseases including Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, Parkinson&#8217;s, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, motor neurone disease and a number of different cancers.  </p>
<p>These oxidation reactions are natural in the body (they happen when our cells use oxygen) and we cannot and should not try to prevent them. But we do need to ensure we are consuming enough antioxidants to clean up the by-product of these reactions, the free radicals.</p>
<p>Antioxidants are free-radical scavengers, scuttling about through the body, not only removing these free radicals, but also repairing the damage that they have done.  Brilliant.</p>
<h3>Where Can I Get Some?</h3>
<p>Thankfully antioxidants are found in tasty, tasty foods!  Here are some of the most important, with a list of our favourite (alkaline, vegetarian) sources:</p>
<ul>
<li>Glutathione: because all other antioxidants depend upon the presence of glutathione to function properly, scientists call it ’the master antioxidant.’  To give your body the best chance of manufacturing enough you have to eat a nice, wide variety of sources.  Foods that help are asparagus, broccoli, avocado and spinach. </li>
<li>Vitamin A and Carotenoids: these ones are easy to get, just hit the fresh aisle of the supermarket or grocery store and head for the colour!  Carrots, peppers (capsicum), broccoli, sweet potato, greens, tomatoes are all a really great source.  If you&#8217;re <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/alkaline-diet-guidelines.php">living alkaline</a> then you&#8217;ll be getting plenty of vitamin A from your <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/item--perfectlyhealthy-Mega-Greens-Powder--MEGA_GREENS.html">greens</a>!
</li>
<li>Vitamin C: people naturally assume oranges and other citrus, but if you are trying to live alkaline and/or trying not to consume too much sugar you can get your vitamin c from green capsicum (peppers), broccoli, spinach (and other greens), tomatoes and cauliflower.  Can you see a theme emerging with some of these antioxidant sources?
</li>
<li>Flavonoids / polyphenols:green tea is great, but don&#8217;t go overboard on the caffeine!  Vegetables high in flavonoids include onion, kale,  green beans, broccoli, celery, tomato, pepper/capsicum, cabbage, carrots and peas!</li>
<li>Vitamin E: no tomatoes in this list!  Vitamin E is all about the almonds and sunflower seeds!  Leafy greens are also pretty good, but almonds and sunflower seeds have almost double the Vitamin E of other food sources.
</li>
<li>Lycopene: you probably already know to hit the tomatoes hard for your lycopene fix, and they are pretty much, hands-down the best source.  The jury is still out as to whether lycopene is absorbed better from cooked instead of raw tomatoes, but it has been proven that vine ripened tomatoes outscore those tomatoes ripened off the vine.  Pink grapefruit is also a decent source if you want to mix it up a bit (grapefruit is also great for the liver).
</li>
<li>Lutein: greens, greens, greens.  That&#8217;s all there really is to say on this one!
</li>
<li>Lignan: flax seed/oil is the very best source of this antioxidant, giving another argument for the case to consume plenty of flax oil every day!  Sesame seeds are also a great source, so if you use an oil blend like <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/item--Udos-Choice-Ultimate-Oil-Blend-250ml--CPOI0001.html">Udo&#8217;s Choice</a> you should be flying!  Again, greens are another of the best food sources.  Are you getting tired of me mentioning greens yet?
</li>
</ul>
<h3>The Four Easiest Ways to Antioxidants</h3>
<p>So in order to get your body&#8217;s requirement of antioxidants daily there are three great sources:</p>
<ol>
<li>Drink <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/alkaline-water/alkaline-water-ionizers.html">Ionized Water</a>: water that has been ionized is rich in antioxidants.  Measured using a method called ORP (oxygen reduction potential) ionized water has an ORP of -450.  To give this context, green tea has an ORP of -200, meaning that ionized water has over twice the antioxidant content of green tea.  Drinking 304 litres of water from your ionizer each day will dramatically increase your antioxidant intake.</li>
<li>Greens &#038; Tomatoes:  by getting plenty of serves of leafy green vegetables, other greens such as asparagus and tomatoes you will be getting a really good range of antioxidants and also providing your body with the sources it needs to manufacture Glutathione</li>
<li><a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/natural-health/antioxidants/item--Young-pHorever-Glutathione-Master-Antioxidant-4oz-114ml--PHMIRACLEglutathione4oz.html">Dr Young&#8217;s Glutathione</a>: Dr Young has created &#8216;the first natural water-based oral Glutathione from avocados.  This product is a fantastic way to guarantee that you will give your body all of the Glutathione it needs to support the function of all the other antioxidants you ingest.  What a great safety net!</li>
<li>pH Ion&#8217;s Indigo: this is an absurdly amazing product.  Each serve of Indigo has an ORAC (Oxygen radical absorbance capacity &#8211; the standardised measure of the antioxidant capacity of foods) level of 8000 &#8211; <b>that&#8217;s the same amount of antioxidants as 4lbs of fruit in one serve</b> &#8211; and without the sugar! This is easily one of the best products I have ever come across!</li>
</ol>
<h3>The Energise Anti-Oxidant Super Meal</h3>
<p>So, to help you on your way to antioxidant heaven, here is our Energise Anti-Oxidant Super Meal.  It is delicious, filling and takes about 10 minutes to make!  Brilliant!  Oh and it is so vibrant and colourful you&#8217;ll probably just want to look at it for ten minutes before you start eating.</p>
<p>Preparation Time: 10 minutes<br />
Serves: 2</p>
<p>1/4 Red cabbage thinly sliced<br />
2 Handfuls of spinach leaves<br />
2 Vine-ripened tomatoes, sliced<br />
1/2 red onion, diced<br />
4 spring onions, thinly sliced/shredded<br />
1/2 cucumber, cut into thin matchsticks<br />
1 carrot, cut into thin matchsticks<br />
1/2 broccoli, chopped small<br />
Handful of beansprouts<br />
1 serve of soba noodles<br />
1 handful of coriander leaves<br />
Juice of 1 lime<br />
Bragg Liquid Aminos/Soy Sauce</p>
<p>Optional: handful of alfalfa sprouts</p>
<p><strong>Directions:</strong></p>
<p>Firstly, tear the coriander and squeeze the lime juice over it to marinate a little.  Now slice everything as indicated above and quickly prepare the soba noodles (they don&#8217;t take long).  Then simply mix everything together in a big salad bowl with the Bragg or soy sauce and eat!</p>
<p>This is a fantastic meal because it is 90% raw, but the noodles give it warmth and some satisfying substance.</p>
<p>With the Bragg or Soy choice it is up to you.  If you want to keep this meal as being highly alkaline then go for the Bragg because soy sauce is highly acidifying in the body.  </p>

<p><img src="http://energiseforlife.com/images/PERSONAL_CARE.jpg" alt="natural cleaning tips" class="alignright"/>I have a question for you. As a species (yes, us humans) we understand more about the human body than ever, and we understand more about how to cure disease and illness than ever &#8211; so why is it that there are more people than at any other time in history suffering from degenerative diseases? </p>
<p>There is no doubt about it &#8211; all data points to the fact that there is a clear correlation between the rise in degenerative disease (cancer, heart disease, diabetes etc.) and our advancement as a race.  It seems that the more advances we make, as a species, the more ill we become.  The more we understand about how to cure illness and disease, the less we seem to know about how to prevent it.  The more time goes on, the sicker we get.</p>
<p>So I have another question for you.  </p>
<p>What do you think the cause of this is?  Is there one cause?  Or is it a mix?</p>
<p>I personally think it is a mix.  Off the top of my head I can think of these potential factors:</p>
<ul>
<li>Our diets have generally become worse because of the convenience of eating unhealthily</li>
<li>We exercise less generally because of the entertainment on offer to us now, and because the vast majority of jobs and careers no longer involve being active and on our feet</li>
<li>The rise of certain foods such as unhealthy oils (margarine, white sugar, flour pasta etc)</li>
<li>The increasing and continued use of drugs such as tobacco, alcohol and recreational drugs</li>
<li>The increase of electricity/potentially harmful devices such as mobile phones, wireless internet/keyboards/laptops etc</li>
<li>Our continued over-reliance on prescription drugs for every cough, cold, headache and hangover</li>
<li>Increasing stress and busy, time-poor lifestyles</li>
</ul>
<p>And then this one:</p>
<p><strong>Our lives are filled with chemicals.  Toxic chemicals. </strong> </p>
<p>We use them every day, putting them on our body (deodorant, shampoo, make-up), in our body (toothpaste, mouthwash), on our clothes (detergents) and all over our homes (cleaning products).  </p>
<p>And <a rel="nofollow" href="http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/07/13/sodium-lauryl-sulfate.aspx">according to Mercola</a>:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Putting chemicals on your skin or scalp may actually be worse than eating them. When you eat something, the enzymes in your saliva and stomach help to break it down and flush it out of your body. However, when you put these chemicals on your skin, they are absorbed straight into your bloodstream without filtering of any kind, going directly to your delicate organs.</p>
<p>Once these chemicals find their way into your body, they tend to accumulate over time because you typically lack the necessary enzymes to break them down.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>After a significant amount of research here are my thoughts and feelings on why you should ditch the chemical products in your home and go for natural cleaning instead &#8211; for your house and body!</p>
<blockquote><p>Every day we face a barrage of environmental toxins that can invade our body through the air we breath, our skin and the substances we ingest.  Our skin is our largest organ, with 2.5 million sweat glands covering our body.  In fact, just one square inch of skin has 650 sweat glands, 65 hair follicles, 234 feet of nerves, 57 feet of capillaries, 19,000 sensory cells, 94 sebaceous (oil) glands, 1250 pain receptors, 13 cold and 78 heat receptors, plus immune cells. </p>
<p>Our skin is not only designed to protect us from the outside, but also to let things in too.  Sunlight, for example, is absorbed by the skin and benefits us in a number of different ways, including in the synthesis of vitamin D. </p>
<p>However, the chemicals and toxins we are putting on our skin every day could be doing more harm than good.  Make-up, moisturiser, deodorant, detergents from clothing and washing, shower gel, soap, shampoo all contain potentially harmful ingredients to which continued exposure to could be highly detrimental to our body.</p>
<p>I know that it is not practical to avoid every potential hazard, and some argue that it is actually beneficial to make our immune systems work a little every now and then.  However, I am firmly of the opinion that in our modern lives we simply come into contact with far too many unnecessary environmental toxins and pollutants, which further contribute to the stress we put our body under through our diet and lifestyle.  </p></blockquote>
<p>I really recommend you do<strong> your own research</strong> on this too, but here are some of the nasties I found lurking in our everyday products:</p>
<p class="alert"><strong>Shampoo &#038; Shower Gel </strong>- Most popular shampoos and shower gels contain concerning chemical substances.  I have long ditched the high-street shampoo for natural, chemical-free products and I’m so glad that I did.  Ingredients in shampoos have been linked to hormone disruption (alkyphenols), cell mutation and immune system suppression (Sodium lauryl sulfate) and nerve damage methylisothiazoline). Methylisothiazoline has also been strongly linked to cancer, liver disorder and neurological disease .  Most shampoos also contain formaldehyde which is a proven carcinogen.</p>

<p class="alert"><strong>Deodorant</strong> &#8211; This is the one I would urge you to avoid more than others.  The problem starts with aluminium, which is present in the majority of popular brand deodorants.  Aluminium in these products has been directly linked to increase risk of many cancers, most prominently breast cancer.  Aluminium has also been linked with neurological problems such as Alzheimer’s disease, motor skill degeneration and bone fragility.  Other toxic substances found in many deodorants include Ethanolamine that is a corrosive chemical that negatively affects the liver, kidney and nervous system.  It is also an irritant that can lead to many skin allergies.</p>
<p class="alert"><strong>Laundry Detergent </strong>- Laundry detergents trouble me because of the amount of time you are exposed to them.  Many chemicals are left behind on your clothes after washing, especially if you use conditioner that is designed to stay on your clothes! Different brands all use different detergents to try and get the cleanest clean and the edge over their competitors, so I have listed a few of the most common toxins to look out for:</p>
<ol>
<li>Petroleum distillates (aka napthas): linked to cancer, lung damage, lung inflammation and damage to mucous membranes.</li>
<li>Phenols:  these are featured in many household products and are highly toxic, a suspected carcinogen and are rapidly absorbed by the body. </li>
<li>Optical brighteners: Can cause skin allergy, toxic to fish and can cause bacterial mutations.</li>
<li>Artificial fragrances: Cause allergies, skin and eye irritation. </li>
<li>Ammonia: Causes burns, cataracts &#038; corneal damage. Studies have shown that long-term repeated exposure can lead to problems inlcuding bronchitis and pneumonia.   Ingestion can lead to stomach and oesophagus ulcers.</li>
<li>Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: when repeatedly in contact with SLS severe eye, skin, and respiratory irritation can occur causing quite some discomfort</li>
<li>Diethanolamine: this common detergent is listed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a pesticide and a hazardous air pollutant, and yet it is allowed in detergents and most cosmetics.  Research has linked it to endocrine system disruption, as well as brain and nervous system effects. It has also been listed as a human skin toxicant and a respiratory toxicant by the EWG.</li>
</ol>
<p class="alert"><strong>Oven Cleaner</strong> &#8211; Oven cleaning sprays are hardcore.  The warning labels on these should be enough to put you off!  Even before I became interested in my health I was still scared of oven cleaner – and after accidently inhaling some my fears were confirmed.  Steer clear of this stuff.   Just one look at an example warning label should be enough to put you off:</p>
<blockquote><p>DANGER: CORROSIVE. BURNS SKIN AND EYES. HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED. May irritate respiratory tract. Contains about 4.5% sodium hydroxide (lye). Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Wear long rubber gloves and eye protection when spraying and wiping. Do not spray toward face. If product contacts person, immediately follow First Aid procedures. Avoid breathing spray mist.
</p></blockquote>
<p class="alert">Oven cleaners ofen contain lye and ammonia, both of which eat the skin.  There is often residue left behind which is then cooked with your food.  I’m getting nervous just writing this stuff.
</p>
<p>There is much more scary information out there on everyday products such as toothpaste, make up, skincare, conditioners, furniture polish and a whole host of other products that we use every single day and put on our body, breathe in and absorb through our skin.  </p>
<p>This, to me, is pretty scary and I think it is pretty clear that this is definitely impacting the state of our health as a species.  </p>
<p>It is so easy, and not actually more expensive, to switch to natural, chemical-free products.  I really recommend you give it a try.  I made the switch eight or so months ago and it has been pretty easy &#8211; I didn&#8217;t find it hard at all.  I just shop for certain products in certain places and don&#8217;t get everything from the supermarket any more.  </p>
<p>And as a bonus, these products are all much more gentle on the environment too.  So are natural cleaning products worth it?  I would say &#8211; absolutely, yes &#8211; stop using chemicals in your home and on your body and start going natural instead!</p>
