Each fortnight we’re putting the best alkaline diet questions we receive from you to our Alkaline Diet Expert, Dr Young trained blood analyst and highly qualified nutritionist – Gareth Edwards.

Gareth is right at the very top of his field, so these answers are absolutely the best you’ll find from arguably Britain’s most qualified expert in this area!

Q&A With Gareth Edwards

Question One: High Blood Pressure & Salts

I have been trying to start my mum on an alkalising diet but she is on blood pressure medication so is it sensible to avoid the salt products? She is taking canastatin. She is having her bp checked in a week’s time to see if they need to up her medication so trying to get it down for then.

I think the medication she will be taking is actually called Candesartan (Cilexetil). (A “statin” drug is used to manage cholesterol rather than blood pressure.) Candesartan acts by inhibiting the action of a protein (angiotensin ll) which constricts blood vessels (causing blood pressure to rise).

Any medication that interferes with the body’s natural regulatory mechanisms will have side effects (although the BNF – pharmaceutical handbook, states that these are low in the case of Candesartan). Helping your Mum to look at the causative factors behind her elevated blood pressure rather than simply progressively taking higher doses of medication has to be wise.

Contrary to generally perceived medical (and nutritional / ist) wisdom on the subject, I have observed patients elevated blood pressure drop when using pHour salts, pH drops and adding increased sea or crystal (not table!) salt to their daily regimes. The reason for this is likely to be that the body uses the mineral salts found in the above mentioned products to help buffer (neutralise) acids.

The most important thing is that your Mum starts to eat alkaline foods and (if possible) drink some green vegetable juices along with regular hydration. It should be fine to add the mineral salt products but I would start with small doses. This might be one or two drops of puripHy in a litre of water or a ¼ scoop of pHour salts in a glass of water. Over time it should be possible to increase this, if she is not experiencing any adverse reactions.

Remember that this might be a slightly longer project than one week! Your Mum’s Doctor will probably be very happy that she’s trying to take charge of the situation with her diet, so she or he should be happy to work with you in keeping her medication low and monitoring the progress of her diet and hydration based approach.

While increased hydration can help “flush” acids from her body, minerals can be flushed out too. Replacing them with alkaline salts is advised, but inter-actions with medication can occur. Hopefully over time the medication can be reduced as her diet changes and salts can be safely increased.

Advise from a diet and pH aware physician could also be useful.

Question Two: Whey Protein & Dairy

I have started eating alkaline foods and am drinking lemon water and am already feeling fantastic, looking radiant, and have more energy. Thank you!! My question is I am using whey protein powder and I’m confused about what dairy product to use with it. At the present time I’m using goat’s milk is this ok?

I’m not a huge fan of whey protein. It’s a very processed by-product of cheese manufacture. A lot of the life giving properties of foods and fluids come from their energetic qualities. Whey protein, like many nutritional supplements (vitamins and other processed or isolated plant constituents) is a heavily processed product without any well substantiated science to support its purported (supposed) health benefits.

I understand that once you start on an alkalising regime you might be concerned about whether you have a sufficient intake of protein (or amino acids). Whey would appear to be a turbo-charged vegetarian source, but I am pretty well convinced that you will find that it is acidifying to body tissue and blood. My observation of dry blood samples of people who have consumed large quantities would support that suggestion. Some basic urine pH testing might also support that, but that can be skewed by other dietary and hydration choices along with alkaline mineral consumption.

If you are eating (and drinking) plenty of dark green leafy vegetables and consuming alkaline mineral salts, you should be getting most of the nutrients you need to build muscle and healthy tissue. Nuts and seeds and sprouted beans and seeds really should give you all the protein that you need. Soaking nuts and seeds overnight before consuming them can make them easier to digest. Try raw nut and seed butters from the Fresh Network for some tasty variety.

Goats’ cheese is considered to be nearer to human milk in its nutritional profile than cow’s milk and it is likely that goats will be less intensively farmed and milked than cattle. I would still use Goats’ milk or cheese occasionally rather than regularly and use a sprouted hemp powder (e.g. HempH pro-fi), which needs to be refrigerated after opening, rather than whey protein.

Question Three: Ionised Water & Meat Cravings

I have been switching over, slowly to ionized water, but I find my body is craving meat, as I am doing that. I had heard that the water has an emulsifying effect on fat in the body and am wondering if that is why I am craving meat and more acidifying food in general.

I vividly remember having dreams about bacon when I first started being a vegetarian. There’s nothing quite like telling yourself that you can’t have something ….. to make you want it.

There is also likely to be a biological element at play here, but I don’t think that it’s going to be alkalised water reducing your uptake of fats. You actually want the fats to be “emulsified” (broken up into smaller, more absorbable globules) in order for them to be digested and enter your blood. The pieces of Dr. Young’s model of health fit together convincingly in my clinical opinion and he would argue that it is imperative that the digestive tract (in its entirety) wants to be as alkaline as possible to be effective.

Even if the ionised water was causing a reduction in your fat absorption, the cravings you experience could be equally strong for olive oil, hemp oil, Udo’s Choice, almonds and avocados. These will all supply healthy fats that your body needs in abundant quantities.

Making a change to more alkaline foods and fluids is likely to result in acidity and toxicity being released from your body tissue. That may be slightly uncomfortable and make you feel like you want to eat the foods that would make it stop happening.

Be “gentle” with yourself and give your body time to adapt. Using a mineral supplement like pHour salts may help your body neutralise acids as they are released into the blood and improve your digestive function and absorption. Adding Himalayan crystal or sea salt to your food may help give you some of the flavour back that you are craving and help you alkalise.

Question Four: Oral Colonics & Underweight

I am a little underweight I think, 51kg at 168cm. Is it alright to do this oral colonic whilst being underweight?

Using the (slightly controversial) body mass index calculator you are on the light side. 2.5 more kilos would put you inside the bracket of what would be considered “normal” using that standard.

Finding it hard to gain weight can be just as much a reflection of acidity / toxicity as being overweight. One of the most immediate areas that acids from diet, fluids, pharmaceutical or recreational drugs (or even emotional trauma) can impact is the delicate tissue of the digestive tract. This can mean that absorbing foods and blood (and body tissue building) fluids can become impaired. Cleansing and re-building the health of your digestive tract are therefore advised for all, including those, like yourself who may be slight or currently lean build.

If you are experiencing constipation or sluggish bowel movements a short period of using a product like core cleanse or pHlush might help to “get things moving”. These products do contain mild acids that are aimed to break down matter in the gut. You also need to focus on re-building rather than “purging”. Low sugar (green) vegetables and fruits (cucumbers, tomatoes and avocados) and their juices can help with that. You might find this blog post by Dr. Young helpful: Click here to read the blog post!

A nutritionally and pH aware physician may be able to help further.

This week Gareth Edwards, our Alkaline Diet Expert, Dr Young trained blood analyst and highly qualified nutritionist, writes about the importance of alkaline minerals for our health.

In this article he concentrates on what he calls the “major players”, which are the four alkaline minerals sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. They are particularly important for our cellular metabolism and for our overall health.

The Importance Of Alkaline Minerals For Health

If you’re interested in alkalising or health in general, you are probably aware of the importance of minerals to health. You might add salt to your food or avoid it. You may choose to take a supplement containing minerals. You may consciously eat foods that contain high levels of minerals you consider to be beneficial. It is possible that you might also avoid foods or drinks that inhibit the absorption of minerals into your blood stream or those that promote or increase their excretion from your body.

This week we’d like to focus on four minerals, why your body needs them and how you might make sure that has the “right” balance of them. We’ve chosen to look at the four minerals contained in Dr. Young’s product pHour salts, but they are contained in other alkalising mineral preparations too.

Four Major “Players”:

Sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium all serve major roles in cellular metabolism (i.e. making us function).

Sodium:

It is the most abundant mineral in body fluids (outside cells). It’s essential for nerve transmission, maintains fluid balance and acts as a major component of one of our body’s instant response buffering systems. Buffer systems are the way that our bodies neutralise acids that are formed in the body by everyday cellular function. Most interestingly and controversially, it is believed, in some circles that it can act as the foundational mineral for trans-mutative changes into the other three following minerals in the body.

Potassium:

It is the most abundant mineral inside our cells. It also is required for nerve transmission as exchanges with sodium ions help create the electrical flow information through our nervous systems. Additionally it maintains pH balance in the cell. When it passes out of the cell hydrogen ions can move in. Concentration of hydrogen ions is what creates the pH (potential of hydrogen). This mineral which is abundant in vegetables and fruits has been associated with a lowering of blood pressure [1].

Magnesium:

It is a huge player in making your body run. It’s central to turning food into energy. It’s needed for the pump that maintains mineral balance in the cells. It too is required for nerve transmission and muscular contraction. Crucially it is essential for functioning of the heart muscle. There are high levels in dark green leafy vegetables as it is the central atom in chlorophyll (the pigment that makes plants green).

Calcium:

It is the most abundant mineral in the body due to it’s presence in bone structure. It too plays an important role in nerve transmission, blood coagulation and the maintenance of muscle tone.

Upping the Anti:

While your body needs all of these minerals for function it can also use them to buffer acids. The Swiss pH focused natural therapist Christopher Vasey, who works closely with pHion suggests that while making alkaline food and hydration choices can help “turn the tide” of increased acidity, it can have limits. He suggests that as acids are released from tissue, they can upset the delicate pH balance of the blood.

Your intelligent body will not allow this to happen and so deep cleansing and release of accumulated acid in tissue may be prevented. He suggests using supplemental minerals in their alkaline form to directly neutralise these acids and allow them to pass into the blood and be eliminated from the body. He also suggests juicing as this makes alkaline minerals more available.

Action Points for Promoting a Healthy Mineral Balance:

Make healthy, alkalising diet and hydration choices wherever possible. Vegetables and (low sugar) fruits are packed with these minerals. Juicing them will facilitate the ease with which they can be absorbed by your body.

Ensure that you get some daily sun exposure (maximise at weekends) to increase Vitamin D production, which will allow you to absorb and metabolise Calcium.

Consider using an alkaline mineral supplement such as pHour salts daily, in order to help promote the release and buffering of acids stored in tissue.

Find healthy alternatives to tea and coffee which can both deplete mineral levels. So can alcohol and stronger acids from Animal protein and vinegar.

Sprouted pulses and beans are preferable to cooked or tinned ones as they contain compounds that can bind to minerals and limit their absorption.

This week Gareth Edwards, our Alkaline Diet Expert and highly qualified nutritionist, is writing about the importance of having sufficient levels of alkaline minerals in order for our buffering systems in our bodies to maintain the crucial and delicate pH of our blood at 7.365.

He also explains why Dr Young’s pHour Salts is a fantastic alkaline mineral supplement in helping to maintain the crucial alkaline state of our bodies and therefore optimum health!

The Importance Of Alkaline Minerals For Optimum Health!

The Food Standards Agency (a British Government organisation) issues a thick book known as “The Composition of Foods”. Originally compiled by McCance and Widdowson some sixty years ago, this book shows mineral and vitamin levels present in a wide range of food stuffs. Disturbingly, but not perhaps surprisingly, one can plot a trend over the years that these tables have been produced, showing a progressive decline in essential mineral levels in vegetables and other foods.

Intuitively we probably know that that probably isn’t a very good thing. What makes it particularly important to us, is that we have buffering systems in our bodies that maintain the crucial and delicate pH of our blood at 7.365 and this uses minerals to function.

The next potential challenge to our health comes from the fact that increased use of pharmaceutical remedies, longer distances from field to plate, greater pollution levels and general adulteration of the food chain, means that most of us face a higher acidic “load” than those who were around when the first McCance and Widdowson food tables were issued.

So what are we to do?

Before jumping to Private Frazer’s (from Dad’s Army) conclusion that “we’re all doomed” take a moment to look at some exciting and refreshing scientific research. In March last year, the peer reviewed journal “Cancer Research” published a paper by Robey et al. (and others) showing that the pH (acidic) tumours could be raised (made more alkaline) by giving patients bicarbonate salts. This also resulted in a reduction of metastases (the spreading of tumours to other body parts).

Also last year, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published a study by Dawson-Hughes et al. showing that the administration of potassium bicarbonate led to reduced bone depletion (osteoporosis) in older men and women. This is particularly significant because the body draws calcium from bones in order to buffer (neutralise) acids. It is important to note that in this trial potassium alone (not in the bicarbonate form) did not help maintain calcium levels and bone density.

Bicarbonate is the alkaline form of minerals. It is (I imagine) universally accepted that large quantities of alkaline salts are secreted by our bodies as part of the digestive process. If however we are using these resources up in ever greater quantities and yet we are effectively consuming less of them, then there is a strong case for supplementing with bicarbonate salts.

One way to raise your body pH (become more alkaline) with mineral salts is to drink glasses of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) mixed with water. I have known this to be helpful and effective for patients. Make sure that the baking soda you use is pure (no anti-caking agents or other chemicals) if you want to try this.

There are however compelling arguments for consuming a broader spectrum of minerals in the alkaline form. It is important for the body to maintain a balance between sodium and potassium. Maintaining an intake of both of these minerals is important. The same is true of calcium and magnesium. In short large intakes of sodium or calcium without potassium or magnesium to balance them is not advisable. A healthy balance is naturally maintained by alkaline (high vegetable) dietary choices. Once we start supplementing it is important to maintain a balanced intake.

Dr. Young’s pHour salts product seems to tick a lot of boxes in helping maintain the crucial alkaline state of our bodies in the face of acidic challenges. It contains sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in bicarbonate forms. (It is worth noting that producing the latter two minerals in bicarbonate forms is considered chemically challenging. I am however assured that Dr. Young has found a method of consistently producing powdered alkaline forms of these two essential minerals).

How To Take It:

I have now been using pHour salts for several years and I am happy to recommend them to virtually all of my clients (see cautions below to understand where I might not).

I generally recommend mixing a scoop of the salts with a glass of water and consuming before anything else in the morning. This can be particularly beneficial in helping to settle my stomach if… I haven’t followed my own advice in what I’ve eaten the night before. You can then have another glass before lunch and dinner.

You may wish to build up to this slowly and the taste will probably take some getting used to. The other option is to mix the pHour salts with green powder and drink them regularly through the day.

Cautions?

pHour salts is quite a strong alkalising agent. That’s generally quite a good thing, but take a moment to reflect on what happens when you put alka-seltzer in water. There’s quite a fizz! The active ingredients in this once ubiquitous remedy are aspirin, sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. The fizz is what occurs when the alkaline sodium and the citric acid mix with water.

When pHour salts meet with strong acids it is likely there will be some kind of “reaction”. It is therefore advisable that you start slowly with small quantities and build up your intake over time. If you are taking or have taken medication for a sustained period of time, it is advisable to consult with a qualified, pH aware physician before starting.

Some people are concerned that taking pHour salts (or other un-refined salts) may lead to increased blood pressure. My experience with patients has confirmed Dr. Young’s and my opinion that the reverse is true. These substances have been part of regimes that have helped patients lower raised blood pressure.

It is however important to remember that pHour salts are not a substitute for alkalising dietary and hydration choices. They need to be used as a supplement to them.

Who Should Use It?

You should!

For most people looking to improve their health, increasing your intake of bicarbonate salts should be highly beneficial. At a rescue remedy level, it’s particularly good for helping with indigestion and for speeding up recovery times after physical exercise (less aching muscles). They can help stop urinary tract infections (UTI’s) quickly too.

The scientific evidence strongly suggests that they can be protective against and helpful in arresting tumours and maintaining healthy bone mass. These are things we all want. Start slowly.

Remember to consult with a pH aware physician before starting if you are on or have been on regular medication.

This week Gareth Edwards, our Alkaline Diet Expert and highly qualified nutritionist, will reveal to you his top reasons for using green drinks and water pH drops.

If you would like to find a drink which provides your body with all the nutrients, minerals and vitamins it needs, because of convenience reasons or because you find it difficult to eat enough vegetables, then you do not have to look any further: the green drink is what you want!

Gareth’s Top Reasons for Using Green Drinks!

When Dr. Young first combined a green powder with drops to raise the pH, he called it the cornerstone pack. Powdered green vegetables, grasses and herbs combined with pure water and negatively charged mineral salts was and still is the foundation supplement. This is what he felt every body should be taking and I recommend it to all my clients.

If You Can’t Eat Your Greens …….

Drink them! Even if you are eating, juicing or blending plenty of green vegetables and grasses ….. drink green powder too. The un-controversial truth, is that green plant foods are really good for us and that we really can’t have too much of them. They are low in sugar, high in nutrients and very importantly, loaded with chlorophyll. This plant made molecule, used to harvest the sun’s energy, is fantastic for the health of our digestive tracts and essential for building healthy red blood cells.

You can consume huge quantities by juicing, blending and eating fresh greens. This is always going to be preferable to having dried versions. If someone is really unwell I would definitely want them to do this, but they can additionally supplement with dried powders mixed with water.

Life in the Fast Lane

The reality of 21st Century life is however that the time and planning required to buy wash and prepare greens may put it lower on your priority list than you would like. Drinking green powder and pH drops mixed with water will be better for you than eating just about any other processed food option that exists.

It can be easy to convince yourself that a muesli bar or vitamin drink is good for you, when you are hungry or thirsty and in a rush. The reality is that neither of them really get off the blocks when compared with powdered greens. The grains and the sweeteners used in the muesli bar will make it acidifying, while the synthetic vitamins added to a “health” drink, in no way recreate the effects of eating or drinking foods containing the natural molecules in a whole food.

It’s Natural

The main difference between green powders and many nutritional supplements is that they are chopped and dried plants. The best quality ones are dried at very low heats and actually have a micro-electronic charge re-attached to them in order to permanently maintain the electron rich qualities of fresh raw plant foods. You’ll see the little chards standing up on the spoon in the brands where this has been done.

Absorbability

On top of the time that it takes to buy and prepare greens there’s the time that it takes to chew them. If these foods are going to do anything other than pass straight through you, you need to either juice them or spend a lot of time at the table leisurely chewing them, while chatting about which way you might vote at the upcoming elections (for UK readers!).

By making the greens into a powder you can nourish yourself in the same way that you would with food, but quicker. This means that drinking your greens and pH drops can be great for helping to overcome cravings for sweet foods or just plain hunger. While that makes the mixture great for helping with losing unwanted pounds, it’s also great for giving you super healthy and absorbable nutrition build healthy blood and healthy body mass (i.e. put on weight, if you feel that you are too skinny.)

The Roots of Health

The acronym C.O.W.S. can be used to describe the nutrients that are essential to our existence. We have to have Chlorophyll (such as young pHorever Liquid ChloropHeal), healthy Oils (such as Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend), alkaline Water (such as young pHorever Puriphy drops) and Salt (such as young pHorever pHour salts) to make us “work”. This will help us build healthy red blood cells, which transport vital oxygen around our bodies and remove potentially toxic carbon dioxide. Red blood cells also become every cell of our body. Our digestive tract, eyes, skin and even teeth and bones are constantly breaking down and being replaced. Red blood cells are the building blocks for all cells in our body.

Drinking powdered greens and pH drops in alkaline water, provides us with three of these essential pillars of healthy body tissue and fluids. (The pH drops are mineral salts).

A Bag of Salty Water

60% of us is water, but the chemistry of that water is changing all the time. As the metabolic reactions that keep us alive take place in our bodies the acidic by-products will start to accumulate in our body fluids. Rather like changing the oil in a racing car, we need to change our body fluids regularly, in order to maintain health. Doing that with salt free acidic liquids like tea, coffee, alcohol or fruit juice is likely to be counter-productive.

Some water filtration methods can also produce slightly acidic water and some mineral waters have a pH below 7. Adding negatively charged minerals in the form of pH drops to fluids will make them more alkaline.

The best way to promote and maintain health is to drink relatively large amounts of water with a pH of 7 or higher. It is however important to remember that in doing this you can “wash out” minerals along with acids. The minerals in pH drops should go some way to replacing these, but ensuring that you have an adequate intake of (unrefined, mineralised) salt (such as Himalayan Crystal Salt) is also important.

Which Products?

Personally I take and recommend the most pure products I can. The only ingredients I really want for myself and my patients are grasses, vegetables, low sugar fruits and herbs along with alkalising minerals (such as pHion Alkaline Minerals). If there’s anything else in the product, do some research to make sure that you feel confident that it is of benefit to you.

Action Plan

So if you have had a few too many (raw, organic, fairtrade ….!) chocolate eggs over Easter or you want to assist your body’s natural seasonal cleaning, it’s time to maintain or increase your intake of green powders with alkalising drops. If you’re new to this then build it up slowly. These are products of de-toxification. Tiny amounts of green powder with a few pH drops can be enough for some people to start with. Aim to build it up slowly to two to three litres a day.

This one single, simple mistake you could be making with your health could be the biggest mistake you can make:

Not consuming enough alkaline minerals on a daily basis could be the single most damaging thing you could possibly do to your health. And yet 99% of us never get enough.

The good news is that in this article I am going to outline exactly how you can guarantee you will get enough, every day.

Plus, as you will know if you’re a regular reader of my blog, I am big on finding scientific proof to back up health claims. And as you read this article in full you will see how my research uncovers the scientific proof that alkaline minerals are critical to your health, and that an absence of sufficient alkaline minerals will not only lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain (or unhealthy weight loss), poor skin and depression, but also insufficient alkaline minerals can certainly lead to cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis and more.

Background: why alkaline minerals and your pH matters

Just as your temperature absolutely has to stay at 37.5 degrees (and your body will do whatever it takes to keep it at that level) your body has to maintain a pH of 7.365.

If you eat, drink and live an lifestyle that is over-acid, the stress it puts on your body to maintain this pH of 7.365 directly leads to sickness and disease. Your body is naturally acid forming – your natural bodily processes, metabolism and the body’s removal of wastes and toxins leads to small amounts of acid by-products. To neutralise this we have a small alkaline buffering system that keeps this 7.365 pH level in our blood and other cells.

And this buffer used to be 100% adequate…until our modern lifestyle kicked in.

Now a diet of pizza, coffee, chips, chocolate, soda, alcohol, white bread, cheese, microwave meals, trans-fats and take aways plus a lifestyle of stress, pollution, chemicals and toxins means that we are constantly pushing our body to the max to try and deal with this constant, overwhelming attack of acids.

To put this in context, the pH scale (that runs from 1-14) is logarithmic. This means that pH 6 is 10x more acidic than pH 7, meaning pH 5 is 100x times more acidic than pH 7 and pH 4 is 1000x more acidic.

Coke has a pH of between 2 and 3 – pH 2.5 is almost 50,000 times more acidic than neutral water, and you need 32 glasses of neutral (pH 7) water to counteract the consumption of one glass of Cola.

So you can see how a diet filled with meats, dairy, fizzy drinks, alcohol etc would quickly deplete these buffers.

The Scientific Proof That Alkaline Minerals Are Critical To Your Health

Recent scientific research into human health, sickness & disease has shown with increasing evidence that living an acid-lifestyle is extremely detrimental to health & that by living alkaline you can increase your health, energy, vitality, immune system, youthfulness and protect yourself from disease.

As recently as October 2009, a Cambridge University study published in the highly respected British Journal of Nutrition stated:

The concept of diet-induced ‘acidosis’ as a cause of disease has been a subject of interest for more than a century. The present article reviews the history of our evolving understanding of physiological pH, the physiological support for the concept of ‘acidosis’, the causes of acidosis, how it is recognised, its short-term effects as well as the long-term clinical relevance of preventative measures, and the research support for normalisation of pH.

The available research makes a compelling case that diet-induced acidosis…is a real phenomenon, and has a significant, clinical, long-term pathophysiological effect that should be recognised and potentially counterbalanced by dietary means.1

The researchers, Pizzornoa, Frassettoa and Katzinger have clearly identified that acidosis (increased acidity in the blood – pH below 7.365) is a very real threat to our health.

Furthermore, my research has shown that the effects of acidosis can directly contribute to various cancers2, 3, 12, arthritis4, osteoporosis5, cardiovascular disease6, diabetes7, depression/psychological disfunctions8, Crohn’s disease9, kidney disease10. Yes, all of the top five killers in Western society and a whole heap more. Furthermore, my experience and the experience of those who have used my twelve week Alkaline Diet Course have given me significant proof that living alkaline also leads to weight/fat loss, muscle gain (also scientifically proven11), energy increases, libido increases, skin improvements and more.

Sound interesting?

Earlier in this article I mentioned that scientific references and proof are very important to me, and I know they are to you too so here are a few extracts and sources for the claims I’ve made above. You can see a full reference list at the bottom of this page.

<p style="font-size:18px; color:#006600";>Alkaline Diet & Cancer

Alkaline Minerals Prevent Cancer Growth
In March 2009, Robey, Baggett, Kirkpatrick et al published a paper in the American Association for Cancer Research Journal proving that alkaline minerals (in this case NaHCO3 – sodium bicarbonate) that raise the extracellular pH of cancer tumor cells and prevent metastasis. Their research shows that the pH of the tumors are always acidic and by using highly alkaline minerals to raise the pH – the growth of the cancer (and involvement of lymph nodes) is prevented.

Source: Cancer Research 69, 2260, March 15, 2009

Cancer Thrives in an Acidic Environment
Also in Cancer Research Journal, in 2006, Gatenby, Gawlinski et al researched and discovered that “chronic exposure of normal tissue to an acidic microenvironment produces toxicity by: (a) normal cell death… and (b) extracellular matrix degradation”. They proffer that glucose imbalance (an acid lifestlye) leads to a chronically acidic microenvironment (the normal cells and molecules that surround a tumor cell) which provides the perfect base for cancer.

<p style="font-size:18px; color:#006600";>Acidosis & Osteoporosis

Alkaline Minerals Prevent Osteoporosis

A recently published study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (Vol 94, No 1 96-102, 2009) has provided further evidence that the consumption of and supplementation with alkaline minerals is essential for good health. The objective of the study was to understand the effect of alkaline minerals (potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride) on bone health – specifically, the ability of these alkaline minerals to slow the bone resorption rate and calcium excretion.

The participants who were taking the bicarbonate supplements had significant reductions in urinary N-telopeptide and calcium excretion when compared to the control group. This means that when taking the alkaline minerals, bones remained stronger and healthier.

<p style="font-size:18px; color:#006600";>Cardiovascular Disease & the Alkaline Diet

Alkaline Minerals Critical to Prevention of CVD

In the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, Joseph Campbell provides a thorough review of the scientific literature surrounding minerals and disease and highlights that the alkaline minerals, magnesium and calcium, are critical to the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). He also highlights that “Excessive consumption of acid producing foods, results in metabolic acidosis. When this occurs, the parathyroid hormone stimulates the removal of calcium from the bones and teeth (osteolysis), to buffer or neutralize the excess acidity. After many years, such calcium loss results in depleted bone, bone weakness and structure.”

<p style="font-size:18px; color:#006600";>Arthritis & Alkalinity

Alkaline Mineral Supplementation Decreases Pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

This incredible study from Institute for Prevention and Nutrition (Germany) provided clear and unquestionable evidence that using an alkaline mineral supplement (30g daily) reduced pain and increased movement in patients with moderately active Rheumatoid Arthritis over a 12-week period.

Do you want to safeguard yourself from degenerative diseases while living with more energy, a lean, fit body, great skin, youthfulness and vitality?

How You Can Guarantee Your Health With Alkaline Minerals

The above studies prove, without question, that having sufficient alkaline mineral buffers to neutralise dietary, lifestyle and metabolic acids is critical to maintaining excellent health, energy and vitality and to the prevention of degenerative disease.

It is also highlighted in several of these studies that using an alkaline mineral supplement is an effective way of guaranteeing your daily intake of alkaline minerals is sufficient.

The efficacy of using a mineral supplement (and these supplements providing a usable form of these minerals) is further supported by this June 2009 study published in the Nutrition Journal, “Effect of a supplement rich in alkaline minerals on acid-base balance in humans”. The study concluded “that the ingestion of a multimineral supplement is associated with both a significant increase in blood and urinary pH”.

If you want to guarantee you have sufficient alkaline minerals then supplementation is a smart choice

My Favourite Alkaline Minerals

I’ve been working and researching in the alkaline diet field for five or six years now and have seen a lot of supplements come and go, and the one thing that determines whether a supplement will be successful or not is: does it work.

Poor quality supplements get found out very quickly.

With that in mind, these are the two alkaline mineral supplements that I personally recommend to you. I have been using these personally for at least four years now and I truly believe that they are incredibly effective.

pHion Balance: Alkaline Minerals

Almost instantly neutralises harmful acids. pHion Alkaline Minerals contains all five primary alkaline minerals: calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and iron. Once these mineral buffers hit the system, they quickly neutralise excess acids. This is my personal #1 choice for an alkaline mineral supplement.

Another bonus of this supplement is that it makes green drinks taste better when mixed together!

A comprehensive multi-mineral formula that will aid your pH balance and gives your body at least 100% RDI of all of the most essential alkaline minerals.

Diet Comes First

You should always aim to get an abundance of nutrients from whole foods – there are no shortcuts here. This is just essential.

To make sure you’re getting plenty of alkaline minerals in your life I believe you should both consume good quality (pref organic) fresh, vibrant, healthy, high-water content, often raw foods PLUS I believe that you should supplement this to ensure that you always have a safety net. It is SO important to get enough of the right minerals every day that I fully believe in supplementation in this case.

This is particularly important if you have been out of balance, because there will be a lot of repair, detoxification and tidying up to do in your blood and other cells, so providing your body with an abundance of alkaline minerals is one of the very best things you can do.

Note on Sodium:

We are talking about proper, pure sodium, not table salt or the salt added to refined foods. According to Dr Young:

Today’s common table salt is a poison that has nothing in common with natural liquid colloidal salt. Most common table salt is made up of chemicals that pollute your body and wreak havoc on your health. Your table salt is actually 97.5% sodium chloride
and 2.5% chemicals such as moisture absorbents, and iodine. Dried at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, the excessive heat alters the natural chemical structure of the salt causing the potential for a myriad of health challenges in your body. [see the full article here]

Sodium is essential in the body, and the above listed alkaline vegetables provide you with a good, clean source of this important salt.

SUMMARY

In this article I have proven that consuming sufficient alkaline minerals is essential to good health. Your body really needs you to minimise the acids you consume and keep putting alkali in. When we consume acids, your body uses the alkaline substances in your body (calcium from bones, for example) to neutralise these acids which causes havoc. The body only has a very tiny supply of alkaline buffers and so by giving the body an abundance of alkalinity we not only ease this burden but also give the body the tools it needs to work optimally.

The four main alkaline minerals are calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium (clean, not refined table salt). These are abundant in fresh vegetables (particularly greens), and we advise you to eat plenty each day!

We also recommend two supplements. In the short-medium term these will help undo any previous damage and assist in detoxifying the body of acids, molds and fungus and in the long-term will help to maintain this alkaline balance, giving you a daily safety net to ensure you get enough of these minerals day-in-day-out.

If not, then your body is likely to be too acidic, which is predominantly caused by a typical Western lifestyle of high stress levels, low levels of exercise and for most, an unhealthy and acidic diet.

An overly acidic diet and lifestyle is one of the core causes for diseases and illnesses common in our Western world such as high blood pressure, high number of strokes, diabetes, cancer, high obesity levels, low energy levels, fatigue, poor digestion and inflammations just to name a few.

In order to prevent us from such diseases and live a long and healthy life we want to aim for our body to be balanced with more alkalinity, which we can achieve by focusing on foods that alkalize our body and avoid those that acidify it. The alkaline balance of our body is determined by the levels of alkaline minerals, which we can take in through a high consumption of mineral rich foods and secondly through the intake of mineral supplements.

In fact, according to research undertaken at the University Hospital of Freiburg and reported in the Journal of Nutrition, alkaline mineral supplementation definitely does have a positive effect on the pH balance of the body.

In the following article we are going to look at what the primary alkaline minerals are, what their functions are, why they are so important for a pH balanced body and therefore good health, and give a detailed overview of foods with the highest concentration of these important alkaline minerals!

What are the Primary Alkaline Minerals?

The primary minerals which are responsible for creating an alkaline state in our body are

Calcium

Magnesium

Potassium

Manganese

Iron

Why are they Alkaline Forming and therefore so important for our Health and Wellbeing?

In order for us to become, and then to stay healthy and fit our body needs to stay in balance. If our body gets out of balance, it cannot work at its most efficient level and the common result is that we increasingly suffer from diseases and illnesses like fatigue, diabetes, heart disease, excess weight, etc. as briefly mentioned above.

We therefore need to create the correct pH balance within our body in order for its metabolic processes to function properly. There are a myriad of factors that influence our pH balance like our emotional and mental state, our levels of physical exercise and to a very significant degree, our diet and the foods we consume on a daily basis.

In this article the emphasis is on the dietary side of things and we will therefore list all the alkaline-mineral rich foods later on.

One of the core questions which arise at this point is, what factors actually determine whether or not certain foods have an alkalising effect on our body?

The simple answer is the primary alkaline minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese and iron.

Why is that?

As we have said before, the main goal is to keep our body in balance and in order to do that we need to rid our bodies off acidic waste like microforms and mycotoxins. In order for us to do this, we need to include as many alkaline-forming foods as possible to our diet. Certain foods have an alkalising effect on the body, as they metabolise and burn down to an ash residue mixed with water once digested.

According to Dr Robert Young, one of the pioneers and key researchers in this field, this ash residue can be neutral, acidic, or alkaline, depending mostly on the mineral content of the foods we eat. Hence the residual effect of food on the pH balance in the body is determined by the mineral content of the food.

Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Manganese and Iron are the primary alkaline minerals as they form basic ash and are alkaline in their elements.

In order to keep our body in an alkaline state, we specifically need to include those foods in our diet that are extremely rich in these primary alkaline minerals.

Laboratory chemical studies of foods have shown that the mineral- and vitamin content of foods has unfortunately declined in the past decades, which has largely been caused by mass farming and the increased use of fertilisers and pesticides. These factors can have an impact on the alkalising effect of foods, which is why organically grown foods and market fresh foods are nutritionally more valuable.

What are the Primary Alkaline Minerals and what are their Core Bodily Functions?

All the primary alkaline minerals are extremely important for the pH balance of our body and for achieving good health. All of them have different health benefits and contribute in their own unique way for staying healthy and our bodily functions to work properly.

We will therefore have a quick overview of their individual health benefits:

Magnesium

What is it?

Magnesium is a mineral found in a wide variety of foods. Inside of our bodies we mostly find magnesium in our bones (60-65%), in our muscles (25%) and in other cell types and body fluids. Magnesium cannot be made in our body like all minerals, which is why we need to take it in through magnesium-rich foods.

What are its Functions?

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential to numerous biological processes in the body. It helps in the absorption of calcium and plays a central role in the formation and strength of bones and teeth. It helps in making sure that the parathyroid glands work normally. The parathyroid glands produce hormones important for bone health.

Magnesium is also vital in maintaining a healthy heart, as it helps to stabilise the rhythm of the heart and aids prevent abnormal blood clotting in the heart.

Apart from that is also helps in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, lowers the chances of heart attacks and strokes, and helps to maintain proper muscle function.

It also helps to turn the food we eat into energy. The metabolic function of magnesium in particular is so complex and diverse, as our cardiovascular system, digestive system, nervous system, muscles, kidneys, liver, hormone-secreting glands, and brain all rely on magnesium for their metabolic function.

Calcium

What is it?

Calcium is the most abundant minerals found in the body and in some foods. It accounts for about 1.5% of the total body weight. About 99% of calcium is stored in our bones and teeth, where it supports their functions, whereas the remaining 1% supports other functions of our body.

What are its Functions?

Calcium has a plethora of important functions like helping to build strong and dense bones and teeth; it regulates muscle contraction and also makes sure blood clots normally. It also plays a central role in the nerve conduction, muscle contraction, regulation of enzyme activity, and cell membrane function.

According to the Food Standards Agency it is also believed that calcium may help to lower high blood pressure and may help to protect against colon and breast cancer, although more evidence is needed.

Potassium

What is it?

Potassium is the third most abundant mineral in the body and belongs together with sodium and chloride to the electrolyte family of minerals. They are called electrolytes because they conduct electricity when dissolved in water. About 95% of potassium in the body is stored within the cells.

What are its Functions?

Potassium has got many important functions like controlling the balance of fluids in the body and may also help in lowering blood pressure. The most important function is that it acts as an electrolyte, which means that it takes on a positive or negative charge that helps to regulate blood pressure, helps with muscle contractions and nerve transmission and generally keeps our bodily functions working right.

According to many studies a high intake in potassium-rich foods can also protect you against heart disease and stroke and is vital in maintaining a good pH balance in the body.

Iron

What is it?

Iron is one of the most abundant metals on earth and an integral part of many proteins and enzymes that are vital to the health of the human body. Iron is also an essential component of hemoglobin, transporting oxygen to all parts of the body. Dietary iron comes in two forms: heme iron and non-heme iron. Heme iron is found only in animal foods, as it is derived from the hemoglobin and myoglobin in animal tissues. Non-heme iron is found in plant foods and dairy products.

What are its Functions?

The core functions of iron are the oxygen distribution and energy production.

Almost two-thirds of iron in the body is found in hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to tissues. Smaller amounts of iron are found in myoglobin, a protein that helps supply oxygen to muscle cells, especially to skeletal muscles and to the heart.

Iron plays a vital role in producing energy as a constituent of several enzymes, it aids in the production of carnitine, and our immune system is dependent on sufficient iron in order to function properly.

Iron deficiency is the most widespread mineral nutritional deficiency both in Britain and worldwide, which is why the intake of iron-rich foods is vital in maintaining good health.

Manganese

What is it?

Manganese is a trace mineral that participates in many enzyme systems in the body.

What are its Functions?

Manganese supplies alkaline buffers that neutralize acids in the system. Manganese-rich foods can help to keep our bones strong and healthy, maintain normal blood sugar levels, maintain the health of our nerves and protect our cells from free radical damage just to name a few.

Which Foods are Richest in the Primary Alkaline Minerals?

So far we have stressed the importance of keeping our body in an solid pH balanced state, which is predominantly determined by the levels of these important minerals in our body.

As these are contained in many foods we will now look at a variety of mineral rich foods, which are extremely healthy and should therefore be included into our diet as much as possible.

Here is a list of foods which we have categorised by their prime alkaline mineral content:

What Foods are Richest in Magnesium?

Spinach and Swiss chard contain the highest levels of Magnesium and are therefore the best source of magnesium.

Other very good sources are broccoli, mustard greens, summer squash, turnip greens, cucumber, green beans, kale, celery, fennel, asparagus, tomato, Brussels sprouts, peppermint and a variety of seeds like pumpkin-, sunflower-, and sesame- and flax seeds.

What Foods are Richest in Calcium?

The best sources of calcium include similarly to magnesium spinach, turnip greens, collard – and mustard greens.

The next best sources are Swiss chard, kale, goat’s milk and herbs and spices such as basil, thyme, dill seed, cinnamon and peppermint leaves.

Good sources of calcium are broccoli, celery, fennel, Brussels sprouts, sesame seeds, cabbage, romaine lettuce, summer squash, green beans, garlic and asparagus. Herbs like parsley, oregano, rosemary and kelp are also good sources of calcium.

Dairy products are generally high in calcium; however we would not recommend them as sources of calcium due to their acidifying effects on our body. We would recommend goat’s milk as a healthier and ‘mildly alkaline’ alternative to cow’s milk products.

What Foods are Richest in Potassium?

Potassium is abundant in many different types of foods and can easily be found in vegetables.

Great sources of Potassium include spinach and chard.

Foods with high levels of Potassium include fennel, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, mustard greens, aubergine, winter squash and tomatoes.

Other good sources are bell pepper, ginger root, avocado, cucumber, parsley, cauliflower and cabbage.

What Foods are Richest in Iron?

The foods containing the highest amounts of iron include spinach, thyme, chard and turmeric.

Other very good sources include mustard greens, turnip greens, romaine lettuce and string beans.

Brussels sprouts, lentils, garbanzo beans, asparagus, broccoli, kelp and leeks are also high in iron.

What Foods are Richest in Manganese?

Foods such as kale, chard, mustard greens, spinach, romaine lettuce, collard greens, turnip greens, garlic, summer squash, green beans, brown rice, ground cloves, garbanzo beans, thyme, cinnamon, peppermint and turmeric contain the highest levels of manganese.

Other good food sources are broccoli, leeks, cucumber, carrots and black beans.

Are there any High-Quality Alkaline Mineral Supplements?

Generally we would advise not to substitute a healthy and balanced diet with health supplements and therefore emphasise the fact that the best sources of these alkaline minerals are the regular consumption of the foods listed above, as they will provide you with all the alkaline minerals you need.

If you do however dislike some of these foods listed or would like to use a high-quality alkaline mineral supplement in order to increase the levels of intake then we can recommend the following supplements:

From the food lists above it becomes very obvious that a lot of foods appear in every food list, which shows that particularly some foods are a fantastic source of alkaline minerals and therefore extremely beneficial for good health.

A range of green vegetables like spinach, chard, kale, Brussels sprouts, beans, broccoli, fennel, cucumber, asparagus and chard stand out, as they are all excellent, very good or good sources of the primary alkaline minerals.

All these foods have a highly alkalising effect on our body and should therefore play an integral part in a healthy and balanced diet.
