<p>If you read my last blog post in this series &#8220;<a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2010/10/28/vitality-into-reality-the-rules-of-abundant-energy-part-1/">Change Your Breakfast, Change Your Life</a>&#8220;, you will remember me saying how when you live with energy, this has a huge knock on effect to your whole life.  Everything just starts getting better &#8211; your career, your finances, your relationships&#8230;everything. </p>
<p>You will also remember how, using the strategies of Joseph McClendon (Tony Robbins&#8217; health guru) I gave you a really simple roadmap to guarantee that your breakfast kickstarts your energy, ignites your metabolism and energises your entire day.  </p>

<h2>Instant Energy</h2>
<p>In this article I am going to give you something else that, when applied, will instantly start to boost your energy.  It will make you feel awesome, positive and raring to go!  I am passionate about helping as many people as possible to live to their potential through health &#038; wellness and I am sure this article will make a big difference.</p>
<p><b>Why You Can Trust Me</b></p>
<p>As you know I have been living alkaline for over six years now and I&#8217;ve had the privilege of working with the best in the world including Dr Young, Dr Vasey, Tony Robbins and of course Joseph McClendon.  I have to say that the one thing that will make more of a difference than anything else, and it is actually one of the cornerstones of Joseph&#8217;s routine that means he looks in his 30s while he&#8217;s in his 50s and why he has not been ill for decades is this:</p>
<h2>Rule #2 &#8211; Hydrate your body with between 3-4 litres of (alkaline) water EVERY DAY&#8230;WITHOUT FAIL</h2>
<p>As Joseph says, &#8220;Life is much simpler than we&#8217;ve been led to believe&#8221; and as Jim Rohn always says, there are just a few simple decisions/behaviours that make more of a difference than everything else put together &#8211; and this is one of them.</p>
<p>I know it sounds too easy, and something you&#8217;ve heard before but listen to me:</p>
<p><b>I promise you that this WILL change your life.  Please if you never take anything else away from my blog, please start to hydrate with 3-4 litres of (alkaline) water every day</b>.  </p>
<p>This is one of those rules that <em>seems so simple and commonly said that people kinda glaze over it, but it is the most important thing you can do for your health. Period.</em></p>
<p><b>This is essential: THE LONGER YOU DO IT, THE BETTER IT GETS. You can&#8217;t just do this every now and then, or flood your body one day and then starve it the next.</b>  Neither can you do that within the day &#8211; drinking a heap of water all at once and then thinking that is it for the rest of the day.</p>
<p><em><u>But if you consistently drink 3-4 litres of water, throughout the day, for several days &#8211; you will, honestly, without question feel a huge surge in your health, energy and vitality.</u></em></p>
<h2>Why Hydration is SO Key to Your Energy</h2>
<p>I am not in the business of saying that any specific action or thing can &#8216;cure&#8217; or &#8216;fix&#8217; a problem, however, I truly, personally believe that a vast majority of health concerns or goals can be reached when you focus on three specific areas.  I believe that if these three are all out of sync then you are likely to experience less than vibrant health, a number of symptoms and <b>very low energy</b>:</p>
<ol>
<li><b><u>Dehydration</u></b>: when we are dehydrated the body goes into shock, it completely slows down, it becomes hyper-acidic, the immune system becomes compromised, and all of our detoxification organs (liver, kidney, lymph) are overworked and this too has knock on effects.  In short, if you imagine your wellbeing as being a row of dominoes, becoming dehydrated is like flicking the first one over.  </li>
<li><b><u>Over-Acidification:</u></b> of course, living an overly acidic life is one of the worst things you can do.  You know that, its why you&#8217;re here on my blog, so I won&#8217;t go into it in too much detail (<a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2009/10/14/the-acid-alkaline-diet-simplified/">for detail click here</a>) but in essence when we consume too many acidic foods (trans fats, dairy, sugar, sweets, chips, pizza, ice cream etc), drinks (beer, wine, coffee, cola etc) and live a stressful life of negative emotions (anxiety, jealousy, worry etc) we put incredible stress on our body to retain the vital pH of 7.365 in our blood and other fluids.  The body will do whatever it takes to stay at that pH and if we keep creating acids it causes havoc throughout our entire body to neutralize this and keep pH 7.365.</li>
<li><b><u>Over-oxidation: </u></b>when our cells oxidise, they die.  When they die we age.  It&#8217;s as simple as that, and the best way to get around this is to consume anti-oxidants.  These come from colourful vegetables, fruits and ionized water.  The only challenge we face is the less fresh our food is, the less antioxidants they contain, so eat fresh, as fresh as possible &#8211; pick the tomato from the vine and put it straight in your mouth!  Of course supplements can help, and there are <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/brands/ph-ion-balance-alkaline/ph-ion-products/item--pHion-Berry-Superfruit-30-Capsules--PHIONINDIGO.html">some great antioxidant supplements</a> out there, but I always recommend getting a good dose of fresh too, and always see food as your primary source of nutrition, rather than supplements.  There is one other great way to get an abundance of antioxidants, and that is from <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/health-benefits-alkaline-water-ionizer">alkaline, ionized water</a> and I will get onto that below.</li>
</ol>
<h2>So Staying Hydrated Will Change Your Life</h2>
<p>It’s true.  But I know you want to know how you can best stay hydrated, I mean – it is easy to know what to do, but making it happen is a whole other ball game.</p>
<p>I know when I first started out I would wake up with every intention of drinking lots of water but each nnight I would find myself thirsty and realise I had forgotten…AGAIN!  </p>
<p>But I have mastered it now, and from talking extensively to <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/joseph-mcclendon-next-step">Joseph McClendon</a> about exactly this type of problem (Joseph is the KING of making things real and making them happen, honestly, the man is an absolute genius) I present to you:</p>
<h2>The Surefire Way to GUARANTEE You Will Drink 3-4 Literes of Water EVERY DAY</h2>
<p>Here is my super easy, step-by-step guide to staying hydrated:</p>
<ol>
<li><b>Routine:</b> in my years of becoming alkaline, and studying the best in the business I have learned that <em>to create a new habit, it is important to link your new desired behaviour to an existing habit</em>.  By this I mean, if you associate a new behaviour into an existing habit then whenever you do embedded habit a you will also automatically do habit b.  You don’t need to work twice as hard and try to install a whole new habit, just use one you’ve already got.  </p>
<p>For instance, here are some habits you could use in your daily routine to train yourself to stay hydrated:</p>
<ul>
<li>As soon as you wake up: get into the routine of drinking a large glass of water, as soon as you wake up.</li>
<li>Cleaning your teeth:  once you’ve cleaned your teeth have a large glass of water – leave a glass by the tap</li>
<li>Before and after bathroom visits: you go several times per day, so there you have it – several glasses of water.</li>
<li>Before meals: before you start preparing your meal, have another glass of water</li>
<li>When you get home: as soon as you walk through the door, have some water</li>
</ul>
<p>You can see where I am going here.  By tying into at least two or three of those per day you will easily get up to three litres on a daily basis.  </li>
<li><b>Reminders</b>:  set your phone to sound an alarm twice per day, and when the alarm goes, you fill up your litre water bottle.  I used to do this, once at 10am and once at 2pm and it meant that I definitely, definitely had at least 2 litres per day.  </li>
<li><b>Immediate Refill!</b> As soon as you finish your glass or bottle refill it immediately, don’t delay!  This is a mistake lots of people make – they finish a glass or bottle and then get lost in work and so it is an hour or two later before they go refill. </li>
<p><b>
<li>Make it Easy</li>
<p></b>: buy a water bottle and have it on you all of the time, on your desk at work, in your hand on your commute etc.  Having access to water is the main thing!  </ol>
<p>By integrating these few principles in I guarantee you’ll be super-hydrated in no time.</p>
<h2>Alkaline Water?</h2>
<p>I have created a massive <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/alkaline-water-resource">alkaline water resource</a> here which explains everything in loads of detail, but to quickly cover it here…</p>
<p>Alkaline Water is clean, filtered water with an optimal pH of 9.5 &#8211; and is the most important part of the alkaline diet. According to Dr. young:<br />
&#8220;If someone were to ask me what&#8217;s the one thing I can do to have better health, then the answer would be very simple: start drinking alkalized and lonized water.&#8221; </p>
<p>By consuming 3-4 litres of alkaline water daily you will begin to experience energy and vitality as this water is alkaline enough to buffer the excess acids in our diet.</p>
<p>There are many ways to make alkaline water including using pH drops and a water ionizer – and I highly recommend using an ionizer, I think they are fantastic, because the ionizer not only makes the water alkaline, but it also makes it more hydrating and infuses it with antioxidants – meaning it provides all three benefits I listed above.  But the ionizer discussion is for another day &#8211;  and <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/health-benefits-alkaline-water-ionizer">here is a very good run down of the exact benefits of drinking ionized, alkaline water</a>.</p>
<p>So I have given you the reasons, the drive and the exact tools to start getting hydrated and unlock your energy.  </p>

If I do nothing else good for my body that day – I will ALWAYS stay hydrated.</p>
<p>You will be amazed at the difference this will make.</p>
<p>However, I have got one more rule still to give you, and I will be publishing that rule in just a few days.  It is an absolute cracker, 100% free and will, along with rules 1 and 2, totally ramp up your energy to a whole new level.</p>

<p>It’s all been pretty full on with hydration and <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/alkaline-water-resource">alkaline water</a> in the Energise world for the last few weeks. This week I’d like to stay loosely with that theme, but focus it down a bit onto sports hydration. This isn’t just for aspiring Kelly Homes or Steve Redgrave’s. </p>
<p><strong>We all need to exercise (a daily walk has been shown to improve many health markers). </strong></p>
<p>How we “re-fuel” afterwards can have a huge impact on how beneficial that exercise really is. If walking, running, swimming, cycling or <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/rebounding_benefits.php">re-bounding</a> don’t light your candle (and even if they do) I’ve seen some research that might interest you and there’s a news story that I feel I have to share with you.</p>
<h2>A tragic story&#8230;and how it could save you</h2>
<p>So …… I recently heard the tragic tale of a 40 year old man with a wife and family who was an ultra-triathlon competitor who died of a brain tumour. A relation told me this story saying that it had made her loose faith in healthy eating and living. </p>
<p>I have seen cases where people have been exercising heavily and developed serious illnesses. My brother in law has recently been experiencing debilitating cramp while competing in cycle races and Steve Redgrave won his last Gold medal as a diagnosed, insulin injecting diabetic.</p>
<p>The cynic may well form the quick view that exercise is in fact bad for you. The picture is however broader than that.</p>
<p>At the age of 47 Ruth Heidrich (www.ruthheidrich.com) was diagnosed with metastasised breast cancer. She was at peak physical fitness. Having had her lump removed she decided to reject conventional treatment and plunged herself fully into a vegan eating plan, based on fresh and raw living foods. S</p>
<p><em>he’s now 75 and by the time she was 71 she’d completed the Hawaii iron man triathlon holding an age group record and has won eight gold medals in the senior Olympics. Amazing…..</em></p>
<h2>When we exercise our body’s need to “detoxify” is heightened. </h2>
<p>Anything other than lying in a catatonic torpor on the floor creates acids. </p>
<p>While physical exercise builds muscle mass, releases feel-good endorphins and increases elimination of metabolites through increased respiration and perspiration, it also increases our body’s production of lactic and other acids. <strong>This increases the need for alkaline nutrition and hydration.</strong> Most of the shelf sports drinks and bars are however highly acidifying to the body fluids and tissues.</p>
<p>Small trials carried out on runners and swimmers have shown that using baking soda could clearly enhance performance times. </p>
<p>This study (one of many) found that:</p>
<blockquote><p>The reasoning behind its use in sports is that, during short bursts of intense exercise, the muscles can begin to produce large amounts of lactic acid, which then contributes to fatigue. Sodium bicarbonate acts as a &#8220;buffer&#8221; against these acids.</p>
<p>&#8220;Essentially sodium bicarbonate is an alkali that increases the pH of the blood,&#8221; explained Folland, of Loughborough University in the UK. &#8220;This seems to reduce and offset the acidity produced in the muscles during intense exercise.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>There was some debate prior to the Beijing Olympics as to whether baking soda could be considered a <a href="http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/body_and_soul/article4539000.ece">performance enhancing drug</a>. </p>
<p>Ross tells me that several sports clubs in Australia (including rugby league sides, AFL teams, MMA gyms and boxing gyms) have installed <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/alkaline-water/alkaline-water-ionizers.html">alkaline water ionisers</a> to give their athletes alkaline water to speed their recovery when hydrating before exercise and when re-hydrating in recovery. Fizzy brown coloured water or orange juice and lemonade tend to be more common in England &#8211; but these are doing the opposite. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/item--Young-pHorever-pHour-Salts-454g--PHMIRACLEsalts.html">pHour salts</a> &#038; <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/green-drinks.html">powdered greens</a> mixed with ionised water make more sense to me as sports hydration than carbohydrate based alternatives with, in some cases, caffeine added. Remember it is salt, not sugar, your body needs for energy.</p>
<p>If all this talk of sport and endurance is making you ….. want to read a good book instead, then perhaps some recent research about <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11223473">good dance moves</a> will be more up your street!</p>
<h2>Exercise really doesn’t need to be (and shouldn’t be!) a slog. </h2>
<p>Busting some shapes, or for the more mature reader, moving with style, it seems can be a sign of ….. good reproductive health. Whether or not that’s true, taking some time out in your day to have a bit of a groove to Jay-Z, Michael Jackson or Fats Waller will loosen up tight muscles and get your lymphatic system moving. </p>
<p>Remember to smile when you’re doing it and …. <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/alkaline-water-resource">drink alkaline water afterwards</a>! </p>
<p>And finally, here’s a story that warms the cockles of my heart. Doctors have been prescribing periods of work and training on a dedicated farm in Suffolk. This is a trial emulating the now common practice in Holland of prescribing farm work to sufferers of certain illnesses.  <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11257843">Click here to read more.</a></p>
<p>A trial in a New York prison where certain inmates worked in the prison garden showed significant reductions in re-offending rates over those who did not do gardening work. The therapeutic benefits of fresh air, sunshine, and green spaces are apparent, but additionally re-connecting with how we grow and produce healthy food has an exciting place in health care and wellness.  </p>

<p>This week Gareth Edwards, our Alkaline Diet Expert and highly qualified nutritionist, is explaining the importance of keeping our bodies well hydrated with alkaline water in order to stay fit and healthy!</p>
<p><b>The Importance of Hydration and Alkaline Water</b><br />

<p>When I drink more water, it just seems to make me pee more. So is there really any point in consuming the large amounts of liquid that alkalising gurus such as <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/dr-young.html">Dr. Young </a>say is so central to the programme? Surely the water is just washing through me?</p>
<p>Well, I guess not surprisingly, the answer is yes “super hydration” can be the absolute cornerstone of building, maintaining and re-gaining health. There are however several do’s and don’ts and a small weekly dose of science that need to be “in the mix”.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.energiseforlife.com/images/blogimages/sickfish.jpg" alt="Sickfish logo" class="alignleft"/>For those of you that are familiar with <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/dr-young.html">Dr. Young</a>’s work you may be aware of his use of the fish bowl metaphor. </p>
<p>If you have a little pet fish in a large bowl of water and he/she becomes unwell, do you medicate the fish or perform surgery or do you change / refresh the water in the bowl? Well hopefully you can see that the best thing you can do for the fish’s health is to improve its “environment”. The same is true for us.</p>
<p><b><u>Vital Statistics</u></b></p>
<p>Approximately 60% of adult bodies are made up of water, and that figure tends to decrease with age and (ironically) with weight gain. So if we want to become healthy starting with:</p>
<p>a) making sure we have enough water and<br />
b) that the water we have in our bodies is “clean” would seem logical.</p>
<p>Of the 60% of our body make up, 40% is inside our cells and 20% outside. All the time that we are existing (alive!) processes are going on inside our cells that create …… you guessed it …… acids! These have to be eliminated from our bodies. So one of the primary reasons for drinking large quantities of alkaline fluids is in order to allow or bodies to “wash out” the potentially harmful acid from our bodies, largely through urination. </p>
<p>So if we hydrate with acidic liquids such as tea, coffee, orange (or other fruit) juice, fizzy drinks or sugar and caffeine added sports drinks, you can see that we are potentially setting ourselves up for health challenges. The root to health lies in regularly changing our body fluids to a more alkaline state.</p>
<p><b><u>Raw water(!):</u></b></p>
<p>I recently read an article by a guy expounding on the virtues of wild water. It was punctuated with pictures of him jumping into and drinking from mountain streams and his own collecting pools. Generally, mountain water, running over rocks, will be alkalising and mineralised.<br />
We can of course go to the shop and buy some raw or wild water. It’s probably going to better for you than the municipal supply, but its “packaging” (thin plastic) can compromise purity and be a hazard for the environment.<br />
Luckily Energise have some great solutions. Filtering your tap water in a jug, will get rid of some of the unwanted chemicals (such as the <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/item--Alkaline-Water-Jug--ALKJUG.html">Energise Alkaline Water Jug</a>).</p>
<p>You can (and should) then add alkalising mineral salts to your water to raise its pH and to make sure that replace any minerals that may be “washed out” as you increase your hydration. You can do this with <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/item--Young-pHorever-pHour-Salts-454g--PHMIRACLEsalts.html">pHour salts </a>or pure baking soda. That is quite strong, so start gently and monitor the effects. Adding <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/cat--pH-Drops-and-Capsules--PH_DROPS.html">pH drops</a> (such as <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/cat--pH-Drops-and-Capsules--PH_DROPS/item--Young-pHorever-Puriphy-2oz-180-servings--PHMIRACLE_PURIPHY.html">Dr Young&#8217;s Puriphy pH water drops</a>) to all fluids will be more gentle, but should also be built up slowly to the recommended concentration.</p>
<p>The Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Bentley (whatever!) system is an <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/equipment/water-ionisers.html">ioniser</a>. This filters your water and then alkalises it. I really think that they are worth the investment.</p>
<p><b><u>Structured Water:</u></b></p>
<p>Just drinking plain water all the time can get a little dull. By adding <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/green-drinks.html">powdered greens </a> (such as <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/green-drinks/item--Dr-Robert-Young-Doc-Brocs-Power-Plants-454g-1-lb--DOCBROCGREENS.html" class="broken_link">Dr Young&#8217;s Doc Broc Power Plants</a>) and <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/cat--pH-Drops-and-Capsules--PH_DROPS.html">alkalising drops </a>you not only help your body to wash out acids but also provide yourself with the building blocks required to build and healthy blood. Remember that your blood cells ultimately become your body … </p>
<p><b><u>Alternatives:</u></b></p>
<p>Adding lemon or lime juice to water will break the monotony of endless still water, and still be alkalising. Diluted or straight green vegetable juices should also help to. Don’t forget that fresh vegetables and raw and cooked soups also have a high fluid content.</p>
<p><b><u>Action Plan:</u></b></p>
<p>The approximate amount of water in a 70 kg person is 40 litres. In this context drinking two to three litres a day (or more) may not seem so overwhelming. </p>
<ul>
<li>Aim to drink 2-3 litres a day (more if you are big) of alkaline water with <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/green-drinks.html">green powder</a> and <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/cat--pH-Drops-and-Capsules--PH_DROPS.html">pH drops</a> in, per day</li>
<li>Use this to “refresh” or energise you in preference to tea, coffee or sugary drinks</li>
<li>If you are thirsty ……..drink(!) alkaline water</li>
<li>Eat more fresh (water rich and low sugar) vegetables</li>
<li>Remember to keep your (unrefined) salt intake up to prevent sodium loss through increased urination</li>
</ul>
<p>If you experience any adverse effects from increased hydration you should consult with a nutritionally and pH balance aware physician.</p>

<p>It is simple, it is easy to put into practice and it is very, very affordable (possibly free).</p>
<p>Before I do, I really, really want you to keep an open mind, put any preconceptions aside, stick with me and just take this advice for what it is.  You may have heard it before, but I want I really don&#8217;t want you to just roll your eyes and tut and say &#8216;I&#8217;ve heard this before&#8217;.</p>
<p>This is a fundamental.  </p>
<p>You should listen/read with an open mind and be ready to absorb the information because, unless you drink 3-4 litres of good quality water <b>every day</b> then you need to be reminded of this stuff.  Sometimes we really need to re-focus and re-learn the basics, because we can become nonchalant about them, even though we know they are so vitally important.  So read on, and take note.  Who knows, you might just take one thing out of this article that makes all of the difference.</p>
<p>I hope that makes sense.</p>
<h3>How Hydration Can Totally Change Your Life</h3>
<p>Water makes up 75% of your total body weight.  <strong>But I don&#8217;t really care about that.</strong>  I&#8217;d been trying to research and start this article for about 3 hours and rewording around and rewriting all of these water facts that really didn&#8217;t seem to mean anything.    They had no impact.</p>
<p>This did:</p>
<p class="alert">a 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25-30% loss of energy in most people</p>
<p>In fact, even mild dehydration can slow our metabolism down by 3% &#8211;  when you consider this, you can see why rehydration can support weight loss!</p>
<p>Proper hydration is so important to every function of the human body (if fluids drop by just 15% we die) and dehydration is at the root cause of such a ridiculous number of symptoms.  From thirst to depression to cancer to obesity to fatigue to bulimia to digestive problems to skin problems and so on.  This is not to say that dehydration is the only cause, but the above is just a small selection of the symptoms of repeated, daily dehydration.</p>
<p><b>But on the more positive side:</b></p>
<p>Being hydrated can change everything.  Just the simple act of drinking enough water, on a daily basis, can have a profound effect on your life.   </p>
<p>It certainly will help you to lose weight, as the water clears acid toxins from your system and boosts your metabolism.  Our body&#8217;s cry for thirst is also often mistaken for hunger, leading to overeating.  </p>
<p>Here are some more facts to show you how important hydration is:</p>
<ul>
<li>A six-year study published in the May 1, 2002 American Journal of Epidemiology found that those who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses.</li>
<li>Drinking the equivalent of 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%.</li>
<li>Drinking the 2 litres of water a day decreases the risk of breast cancer by 79%</li>
</ul>
<p>In fact, one of the biggest impacts that our alkaline diet course is having on people is that it is making them properly hydrate themselves.    </p>
<p class="alert">It is so simple, but the reason why I think we often don&#8217;t give enough importance to hydration is that it is so simple.  It is hard for our brain to connect such a profound effect with something as simple as drinking a proper amount of water each day.</p>
<p>So I am not going to argue the point too much &#8211; I think 99% of you will agree that drinking enough water on a daily basis is absolutely a good thing.  So let&#8217;s get into the three most important questions:</p>
<ol>
<li>How Much?</li>
<li>What is Good Water</li>
<li>How Can I Make it a Habit?!</li>
</ol>
<h3>How Much Water Should I Drink</h3>
<p>The easy answer is 3-4 litres per day.  I know this sounds a lot, but it isn&#8217;t really.  And I also know that you might be thinking, that is too much for me, I&#8217;m only little, so the official calculator is:</p>
<p class="note"><strong>1 litre of water per 40lbs (18k or 2.85stone) of body weight</strong></p>
<p>For example, 12st = 4.2 litres per day</p>
<p>This, I have found, accurately works out to between 3-4 litres for most people each day.  And if you stick to this, every day, I promise you there will be a massive increase in your health, energy, mental clarity and vitality.</p>
<p>But not any old water will do&#8230;which brings me onto:</p>
<h3>What Should I Drink?</h3>
<p>When we talk about drinking 3-4 litres per day, it is important to make this water as good, high quality and clean as you possibly can.  To be honest, while drinking 3-4 litres of tap water will still hydrate you and give you some benefit, getting good, clean water is so important and so much better.</p>
<p>My definition of good water is:</p>
<p><b>Mineral-rich, toxin-free, filtered water with a pH of above 7 (preferably 9)</b></p>
<p>When the water fits this description you will <em>really</em> see a difference.    I am sure that most of you will agree that toxin-free, mineral-rich water is a good thing, but what about the alkaline?  Well, this is a blog post in itself (in fact, it is probably a summary of this entire blog), but I will cut and paste this excerpt from my interview with Ravi from sethigherstandards.com as I describe it well!</p>
<blockquote><p>Your body HAS to keep the pH of your blood, cells and other fluids at just slightly alkaline (pH 7.365) and it will do ANYTHING it has to in order to maintain this pH balance.  To do this, your body calls upon its store of alkaline buffers, which it draws upon to neutralize the acids we ingest or create through bodily processes.  This store of buffers is very easily depleted because most of us eat and drink such strong acids.  To put this in context, the pH scale is logarithmic &#8211; so pH 6 is 10x more acidic than pH 7, meaning pH 5 is 100x times more acidic than pH 7 and pH 4 is 1000x more acidic.  Coke has a pH of between 2 and 3.  So you can see how a diet filled with meats, dairy, fizzy drinks, alcohol etc would quickly deplete these buffers.</p>
<p>And when we deplete these buffers and still ingest more acids…what happens? The body is forced into drawing upon the alkaline minerals it has to buffer which causes havoc in the body &#8211; for instance, if the body is constantly drawing calcium to neutralize the acids we consume then the symptoms of osteoporosis emerge (hence the recent research articles linking cola consumption with osteoporosis).</p>
<p>This is just one example.  Another outcome is that the body also hangs onto excess fat to protect our body/organs from the damage caused in an acidic state.   Another outcome is that we ingest high levels of sugar, the sugar ferments in the blood, creating more acids, which creates acid wastes, which feeds the sugar which has fermented into bacteria, yeast, fungus which create more acid wastes etc and a vicious cycle of acid creation further depletes the alkaline buffers resulting in skin conditions, yeast infections, mood and emotional problems, diabetes and a whole heap of other symptoms.</p>
<p>By eating 70-80% alkaline foods we not only take this stress away from the body, but we also flood our body with vitamins, fiber, minerals, nutrients, good fats, proteins, antioxidants etc.  which build the blood, cleanse our system and ultimately make us feel great.</p>
<p>Still, the simple explanation is the one I prefer &#8211; eat lots of great, fresh foods and treat treats as a treat.</p></blockquote>
<p>So when we infuse our body with alkaline, mineral-rich and <em>acid</em>-free water we help to flush out these toxins, rehydrate our system, detoxify ourself of yeasts, fungus and molds and actually raise the pH of our internal environment.  Our diet and modern lifestyle will always lead us to consume more acid than alkaline and so by giving our body this gift of alkaline water, we help to neutralise the acids and retain our balance at 7.365.</p>
<p>To give more context, here is a great quote from <a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1040551554&#038;ref=profile#/profile.php?id=1294968067">Dr Young from his facebook page of all places</a> (here is <a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1040551554&#038;ref=profile#/profile.php?id=1040551554&#038;ref=profile">my facebook page</a> if you&#8217;re interested!):</p>
<blockquote><p>Beer is just another form of urine. That&#8217;s why it smells and some-what tastes like urine. The pH of beer is around 5 and the pH of coffee is around 5.5. The pH of pH Miracle Water is 9.5 which is 50,000 times more alkaline than beer or coffee. I am sure you are aware that you can keep a cancerous cell alive in beer or coffee indefinitely. They love an acidic pH because cancerous cells are acidic cells.</p>
<p>Beer is 1000 times more alkaline than diet soda. Your own urine is 10,000 times more alkaline than diet soda. I am sure you&#8217;re not going to drink an acidic beer, let alone drink your own urine. Diet soda is an acidic poison in a bottle or can. It is full of acidic sugar, (artificial or natural) carbonic and phosphoric acid. Give up the acidic diet soda and have an alkaline day with alkaline water and green drinks!</p></blockquote>
<p><b>Making Water That Fits This Criteria</b><br />
There are three main methods discuss:</p>
<ol>
<li>Using a distiller</li>
<li>Using a water ionizer</li>
<li>Adding alkaline ingredients to the water</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Using a Distiller</strong>:   using a distiller is a very effective yet inefficient way of purifying water.   As noted by <a href="http://www.drweil.com/u/QA/QA21181/" class="broken_link">Dr. Weil</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>the process of distillation kills and removes virtually all bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and other organic and inorganic contaminants. Once distilled, the water is as &#8216;pure&#8217; as water can reasonably be.</p></blockquote>
<p>However, this process is not only environmentally inefficient, but it also creates a slightly acid-forming water with a pH of between 6-7.  Now, this is not the only bad news.  Unfortunately this water also has a positive ORP.  I don&#8217;t want to get too technical here, but ORP is the measure of antioxidant capacity in water and a positive ORP means that the water is oxidising to your cells (yes, it suffocates and kills them and creates free radicals).  </p>
<p>In essence, distilled water is water that has been turned to steam and then condensed back into water.  This process, as noted above kills all impurities, removes toxins but also removes beneficial minerals, makes the water have an acidic pH and +ORP.  In my opinion, this is not a good option when compared to other <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BcdrToMtBM">alkaline water filter</a> optioins.</p>
<p><b>Using a water ioniser </b></p>
<p>Water ionisers are, unsurprisingly, products that ionise water.  The water is ionised (electrically enhanced) by running it over positive and negative electrodes.  This separates the water into alkaline (70%) and acidic (30%).  This is exceptionally beneficial as the alkaline water is then used for drinking, while the acidic water can be used on the outside of the body as it is proven to kill many types of bacteria. </p>
<p>These are more expensive that distillers but are FAR more user friendly, as they simply attach to your tap and produce water at a pH of your choice instantly, as soon as you turn the tap on!  </p>

<p><b>Adding alkaline ingredients to the water</b></p>
<p>The third method is to add ingredients to the water to increase its alkalinity.  I would only make these alkaline water additions to water that had already been put through an alkaline water filter, however they can be handy in an emergency when there is only mineral or tap water to hand.  </p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/1002/lemon-water-alkalising-superstar">Lemon Water</a>: I have already blogged lemon water to death, however, I will mention it here as it really is an alkalising superstar.  By squeezing lemon juice (or lime juice) into water you immediately give it a healthful kick.  Lemon water is very alkaline and is great in helping to detoxify the liver and kidneys.</li>
<li>pH Drops:  these are an excellent way to dramatically increase the alkalinity of the water.    These drops offer intense alkalinity and only a few are needed for an incredible boost to the alkalinity of your drink. </ul>
<p><em>What Else Can I Drink</em></p>
<p>Alongside this lovely water, I recommend you to drink: herbal tea, vegetable juice and green drinks.  Try to stay away from fizzy water though as the carbonation process makes the water have a pH of about 5.</p>
<p>BUT IMPORTANTLY &#8211; I don&#8217;t want any of this to hold you back.  I don&#8217;t want you to think &#8216;great &#8211; I&#8217;m going to get really hydrated, but just after I do x, y and z and buy x, y and z.&#8217;.  No excuses.  Start hydrating NOW.</p>
<h3>How to Start Hydrating &#8211; <em>and make it a habit</em></h3>
<p>I know it is difficult.  Not only to start consuming this volume of water, but also to simply <em>remember</em> to drink this much water throughout the day.  </p>
<p>Here are my top five tips for making this a habit.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Carry A Big Bottle: </strong>this is the best tip &#8211; because it makes sure you always have your water on you to sip.  I personally like to have a big 1 litre bottle at all times (<a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/cat--Alkalising-Supplements--ALKALISING_SUPPLEMENTS/water-bottle.html">here is a nice energiseforlife.com bottle you can order!</a>) and when I do this I always drink my 4.2 litres!</li>
<li><strong>Set a Reminder:</strong> this isn&#8217;t something you will have to do forever, but I recommend you set an hour reminder on your phone or watch to beep and remind you to have a big gulp or a glass of water every hour.  It is amazing how often you suddenly realise it is lunchtime and you&#8217;ve not really had anything to drink!</li>
<li><b>Substitute:</b> for every other drink you go to have, be it a tea, coffee or juice &#8211; substitute in water.  You will be surprised at a) how good it makes you feel and b) how much of a pat on the back you can give yourself afterwards.  This simple tip can lead to some really good, positive reinforcement that yes, you can say no and it makes you even more healthy!</li>
<li><b>Always Have Water At Your Desk:</b> simply having a bottle at your desk at all times means that when you <em>do</em> remember you can tuck straight into it, rather than thinking &#8220;oh yes, water, now let me just finish this email first&#8221;</li>
<li><strong>Finally &#8211; know your outcome and plan your route to success</strong>.  <a href="http://www.energiseforlife.com/images/blogimages/Daily_Hydration_Schedule.pdf">Here is a daily hydration schedule you can download </a>(sorry it is low res at the minute &#8211; there is a high res on the way).  You can use this to build up your new hydration habit over the next five weeks, so that at the end of week five you are hitting your hydration target day in, day out.  And if you have been hydrating for five weeks I can PROMISE that you will feel a profound difference in your health and wellbeing.</li>
</ol>
<p>If nothing else &#8211; your body uses up 2.5 litres of alkaline water per day in its activities to simply keep you alive &#8211; <em>please at least put that back in!</em>.</p>
