Tofu with Indian SpinachThis is a delicious and alkaline recipe using tofu and spinach as the main ingredients. It has got a lovely texture and an interesting flavour given by the variety of spices used in this recipe.

Tofu is a great alternative to meat and contains a low amount of calories. It also contains large amounts of iron and little fat. Depending on the coagulant used in manufacturing, the tofu may also be high in magnesium and/or calcium.

Spinach as we know is highly alkalising and has a high nutritional value. It is extremely rich in antioxidants and is a rich source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Mangenese, Zink and Iron, just to name a few.

Alkaline Diet Recipe #96: Sweet Potato Soup

by Ross on November 30, 2010

Sweet Potato SoupThis sweet potato soup recipe has been created by the famous British chef Antony Worrall Thompson. Callum, one of the Energise directors, forwarded this recipe to me and it is truly delicious and healthy too.

As we are experiencing arctic temperatures in the UK at the moment, a soup is the perfect type of food to warm you up and provide you with all the nutrients your body needs. The main ingredient here are sweet potatoes, which are not strictly alkaline and should be eaten in moderation. They are however a root vegetable which are currently in season and are perfect for using in soups. Just make sure that they are fresh and do not have any fungal spots when you buy them.

Roast Garlic and Spinach SaladIf I would have to name two of my favourite vegetables then spinach and garlic would be on top of that list!

This salad contains both spinach and roast garlic, which are both packed with nutrients and are highly alkalising. Spinach is such a versatile vegetable as it can be fried, quickly boiled or steamed.

When spinach is used fresh, like in this salad, it is extremely rich in antioxidants and a great source of vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin C, manganese, magnesium, iron, folate, zinc just to name a few. As the list could go on you can call spinach a real superfood!

Green Smoothie Recipe by Gareth Edwards

by Ross on August 16, 2010

Gareth's green smoothieThis is a delicious and ultra healthy green smoothie recipe from Gareth Edwards, our Dr Young trained blood analyst and highly qualified nutritionist.

In order for nutrients to be digested, the food containing them needs to be “broken down”. Chewing is a vital part of this process. A speedy and efficient alternative to hours at the table is to make nutritious salads “in the blender”. The result is a delicious snack or meal.

Using predominantly green foods means that the smoothie is rich in chlorophyll, minerals, phyto-nutrients and has a low glaecemic load.

TurnipsThis is a delicious vegetable stew from the Eastern Mediterranean using sweet baby turnips, tender spinach and ripe tomatoes.

Baby turnips are used for this dish, as they have a rounded flavour – sweet and slightly peppery – and are nutritionally rich. Turnips are rich in Vitamin C, phosphorus and fibre. They also contain vitamin B6, calcium, manganese, potassium and indoles – compounds that helps the body generate a number of beneficial enzymes.

The other two ingredients, spinach and tomatoes, are also two of the healthiest vegetables available and are packed with nutrients.

Ribollita SoupIn these lingering arctic temperatures and snowy conditions, this is the perfect soup to warm you up nicely!

Ribollita is a famous soup from Tuscany in Italy and like many dishes from this region it has got peasant origins. The word Ribollita literally means “reboiled”, as it was originally made by reheating the leftover vegetable soup from the previous day.

The core ingredients of this Tuscan soup are green vegetables and beans, which make this soup not only delicious but also highly nutritious and alkaline!

Enjoy!
