Hi,

First, THANK YOU for your IMPORTANT website and for the opportunity to ask you questions! :) I’m just a bit confused about the following foods in regards to your lists…I thought that the FLESH of potatoes and spinach were acidic; potato SKINS and mushrooms were alkaline, and that RAW dairy products (from cows) were neutral. Also, hazelnuts and macadamia nuts are on BOTH of your lists, and aren’t almond oil, sesame seed oil, and sunflower seed oil alkaline?

Wow – very comprehensive. On page 5, the quick chart, I noticed that what I think should say “lime” actually says “life”

I understand that lemon and lime is alkalizing once it metabolizes in the body. But I thought vinegar was the same way. I have been adding a little vinegar to my water as a way of alkalizing. But I see on your chart that vinegar has a highly acidifying effect on the body. Can you give some more information about how/why vinegar is acidic in the body?

Thanks!

You list two different charts above. One says “1.3″ at the end. Why are there two and what is the difference between them?

On the first chart brown rice is down as moderately acidic, but you then put it on the “eat these alkaline foods freely ” part. Could you clarify please? And is rice syrup the same thing as rice malt? I see rice syrup is very acidic.
Thanks

Number one: thank you so much for finally clearing up the confusion on the different charts.

2 Why do you not want onion or garlic in the green drink (first of the five recipes)?

3 Why do you combine beans and lime in one recipe? I thought starches should never go with acid tasting fruit?

Thanks so much for your time,

Jeannet

For clarity: I understand that the lime is alkaline forming in the body. But in the mouth and stomach it will still be acid and arrest the action of ptyalin, which is needed to digest the starch of the beans. So my question is really about the ptyalin!

Dear Ross,

My grandmother has been fighting with cancer for over 7 years now. The doctors have now said that there is nothing that they can do, it is quite advanced. I started my grandmother on alkaline water last week and a super green food supplement. Is there anything else I can do or you can suggest? How long does it take for it to be effective? She can not stomach solid foods as there is a blockage in the bowels and has been vomiting for three months now..bile. But the bile has now seemed to stop with the new anti-sickness meds. but still vomits food and is very dehydrated.

Any help, suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the great content. I receive a lot of questions about this from patients, and unfortunately, there are a lot of misleading charts on the internet. I beleive this to be the most accurate, based on my knowledge of nutrition. Glad I found this. I practice in Michigan, where things are still tough, and I love to point them toward free resources, rather than over-priced health books on Amazon.

Thanks again!

Hi, I am just curious about roasting vegetables in olive oil.
Does it cnahe the benefit of the vegetables after they are cooked. It is hard to know what is best way to eat them. example I have heard many time that spinach is better for you if it is cooked and does not give you many benefits if it is not? is there some sort of guide on weather to eat raw or cooked? Thanks for your wonderful website and all the information you share!!!

I CANNOT understand why you approve use of lemons and limes.

THEY ARE EXTREMELY ACID!!

Citric acid is very strong and will attack marble worktops in your kitchen even.

WHY, WHY, WHY

Hi. I’ve been reserching alkaline diets and found alot of common information in the yeast diets as well. I tried elminating all yeast and anything that accelerates yeast production. I got rid of all dairy, bread, fruits except lemon and lime, eliminated corn which is highly acidic , caffeine and alcohol, and felt better when I ate lite clean meals. But I still had ibs symptoms. I’m going crazy here. Is it possible that my body is suffering from acid withdrawals? How long will it take to feel better by sticking to an alkaline diet? Are the acid reflux medicine’s doing more harm than good? Can I get off of them by changing my diet? If so, when do I make the transition?

Hi Lori,
I just found this site while searching for information on pH levels since I suffer from severe psoriasis. But I USED to also have terrible digestive problems, mostly cramping and diarrhea that was unpredictable and was ruining my life. Last year at this time I tried two things: I cut gluten from my diet and I tried a colon cleanse using bentonite clay and psyllium drink for a few weeks. Also, during that time I ate mostly small meals (white rice and vegetables.) However, the BIGGEST change was increasing my water intake. I began to drink 8 to 10 glasses a day. Within a few days, the diarrhea disappeared and has only returned once or twice over the past year. On those occassions I have used such foods as chamomile tea, white rice, fresh pineapple and blueberries, etc. to combat the attack. But I have to say, in general, I am FREE from the problem. I haven’t had to go to the lengths you have (diet-wise) but am careful to make sure I don’t eat wheat products. All I can advise is to try the water therapy (now I drink around 6 glasses a day). Hope this helps and all the best to you,
Lynne

I’ve taken Omega 3 and lots of it for several years (DHA (fish oil capsules by Roex); and Barlean’s Essential Woman (organic w/ evening primrose and flaxseed oils in liquid form in a protein smoothie containing alkaline water and frozen wild blueberries). I have an ionizer and I drink 3 to 4 liters of alkaline water daily. I don’t do recipes much, just make them up as I go along using many alkaline ingredients, but I am on Dr. Rob Thompson’s Low-Starch Diabetes Solution, and every day that I eat no bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, and corn I lose a pound or two. I don’t have to give up the starches entirely, because it is LOW starch, not NO starch. I don’t think I am diabetic anymore as I have none of the symptoms, but I am hypothyroid, which has been far worse for me than diabetes. According to everything I can find on the internet, soy is lethal for thyroid function, so I eat ABSOLUTELY NO SOY if I know it’s in there. The problem is there’s a list as long as your arm of misleading terms on food labels to disguise the fact that you are eating soy. The most frequently used one is “natural flavors.” Thanks to the FDA I am on a prescription drug for the first time in years (it’s levo-thyroxine, the generic form of Synthroid and it has many side effects such as hair loss and weight gain.)

Hi. I am 67 have acute osteoporis, and an alkaline diet has been suggested. Will this help build up bone mass. Dairy is not alkaline. How can I build up calcium if I can’t take eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt etc., Are they not good for you. I am quite healthy otherwise, but my stools are frequently loose , so feel as though my body is not digesting properly. I eat avocado, apples, and steam vegetables, brocollie, carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, green beans etc., and started to eat almonds, which I had to stay off for a year while I was having orthodontics. I like to eat desserts, is that my problem, and I have honey in my tea. Use bananas and raisins to sweeten oats in the morning, but make the oats with milk. What should I cut out, as really want to build up this bone mass. My thumb nails are very ridgy, and the rest of my nails are starting to become ridgy too. Thanks for any tips.

Where can I find a listing for less common food. In particular is Calamondin a small ornamental sour fruit used in Asian cooking an alkaline or acid causing fruit?

Your chart lists honey as highly acidic. Is it less acidic if it is raw rather than processed.

Thank you

Hello Noreen,
Honey is still sugar and still acidic in any way. For the less common food here is a tip the greener it is the more alkaline and the sweeter it is it more acidic. Hope that helps.

I used to eat a Macrobiotic diet in the early 70′s & this seems to be a very similar diet. Sweets of any kind were to be nixed, as well as meats of any mammal or fowl. Fish of any kind was to be a very small portion of any meal, and so were fruits. Greens, onions, garlic, & root vegetables were to be the main part of each meal, along with a bowl of long grain brown rice. Un-pasturized Tamari soy sauce was allowed in very small applications, as well as miso paste. Comment Please,,,,,Dan.

Different diets evolve in different era. But I think it is really similar to the Alkaline Diet. Anything acidic is really not encourage like, meat, dairy products, sugar, caffeine, and the like.

Alkaline Diet has really worked wonders. Had breast cancer – 2 yrs ago – (Estrogen off the chart 400+ (estradiol) even after having total hysterectomy 23 yrs ago) – then Mastectomy – even with cancer meds estradiol 183 – cancer meds lead to stroke – had to get off them – had to heal myself – Alkaline Diet here I come! Within 6 wks on the Alkaline Diet – my estradiol dropped to 21 ! So far 2 clean PET scans – I am esctatic – my docs (oncologist, gynecologist, gastroenterologist) asked me what I was doing – I told them Alkaline ( I have their full support) – they were all skeptical at 1st – but I am the proof there has to be something to this – and I love it – I am even growing lime trees now – start each day with a filtered glass of water and 1/2 squeezed lime ! I use some supplements as well – but eating Alkaline – I think is the secret ! My blood work is perfect ! Happy Healthy Life ! Thanks Ross for getting the word out about this – wanted to let you know what a huge difference this had made in my life!

Dear Ross,

Thank you for providing this acid-alkaline food list to the world community for free. I am glad with it. Nonetheless I do notice some inconsistencies. Examples are “hazelnuts” being listed in both the “acid” and “alkaline” longlists and “amaranth” being listed as “acidic” in the shortlist, but as “alkaline” in the longlist.
I have a few questions too:
A fresh lemon is alkaline. Is it true that does no longer apply to bottled lemon juice because of the processing involved, as some maintain?
Brocolli is highly alkaline. Does this still apply after cooking it?

Sincerely,

Whist Cat.

some acidic food turn alkaline when they interact with saliva and gastric substances- lemons and limes are a perfect example of this type of fruit that are acidic, but when ingested they become alkaline. Hope that helps. I tend not to eat cantaloupe because it is constipating.

Thank you so much for the free charts! My mouth was feeling very acidic lately, you know, feeling prone to cold sores even though I have none, and very acidic after eating an orange or pineapple or something. My body seems to go through cycles and every few months I feel like I’ve become too acidic, yet never knew all the right foods to get me back in balance. I was surprized by the list, not realizing that sugar content increases the acidity of a food, not it’s citric acid content. Like, I would never have guessed that lemons, limes, tomatoes, etc are actually alkine foods, or that yougart, cheese and milk are acidic. Thanks for the help, and the printable, concise list, and for free even, wow! thanks,

Ive suffered for some years now with overacidity, slowly I came to this realization, equally slowly I came to understand it was caused by my taking triple anti-biotic to get rid of parasite picked up in Malayan Jungle when with UK Armed forces.
The medical profession know of no cure, or if they do are powerless in the face of big pharma to implement it.
It all comes back to, “What you eat, is what you are” hopefully this will cure what ails me, and by way of thanks to you all, I give you this for free. Anyone out there who has gout, dont dispair, take quarter of a teaspoon of bi-carbonate of soda in water morning and night and in a coupla days it will be gone, then dont drink beer, eat liver, kidneys, or peas, and like me you wont get it again, its the most excruciating pain Ive ever experienced, all of the above foods and drink conyain “Purins” which give you gout and drink 4 glasses of water a day, Enjoy,

I have looked at many experts’ charts for acid/alkaline foods and they all differ widely! And some foods extremely! Some classified by one as high acid on another are high alkaline.

There must be a more scientific way of measuring this so there is not a disparity. It is impossible to know the answers if there is such a difference. Why should I believe your chart?

Thanks,

Ron

look up BPPV on the internet, crystals in the inner ear become displaced, medication won’t fix it but the Epley Manoeuvre (head movement) may fix it. I had this for months and it took the Doctor minutes to fix it – amazing stuff.
Good luck.

Is there another name for Haricot Beans? I’ve never heard of them, and have never seen them for sale, so perhaps there is another name for them?

Reply

100 Lori December 2, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Boston beans, navy beans, pearl haricots, and fagioli are other names. The beans are roughly oval shaped and flattened, with a pure white edible skin.

To grow haricots, obtain seeds from a gardening company and plant them in a sunny place in the spring, providing stakes to support the plants as they grow. When seedlings appear, thin them out so that the bean plants will not be crowded, and keep the soil well watered. Allow the beans to mature and dry on the vine, and then collect the beans and shell them for storage.

Oh – that’s brilliant! I have started my alkaline diet today beginning with a 3 day juice fast. I have a great recipe here for a master cleanser.
Boil 1 Gallon of water – pore into glass jug. Add juice from 4-6 lemons and 2-3 teaspoons of maple syrup. Then add approximately 4 teaspoons of Cayenne Pepper – more if you can take it! Cayenne Pepper is very alkaline and corrects the ph balance within the body almost immediately. Good Luck Everyone.

Isn’t syrup highly acidic? This fast cannot be good. Why not just add the lemons and drink freely…

With this comes Acromegaly disease. Would this be a good diet to follow to get the IGF-1 or growth hormone level decreased or help to bring this level down to the normal range which is around 88-249. Mine is 600 at this time. When it is high it causes headache pain and all kinds of other symptoms. Thanks.

Hello Ross! I need some help figuring out the acidity or alkanilinity of certain foods that you didn’t mention on your list! I really hope you can help me since these are essential parts of the diet in my country. These foods are :

Platains (they look like big green bannanas and are eaten boiled)
Green Bannanas (the same as the fruit bannana but before they get ripe and yellow/sweet, they’re also eaten boiled as a salted dish and not sweet)

Cassava

Potatoes (I didn’t know what you meant by “new” potatoes…are only “new baby potatoes” good?)

Chayote

butternut squash (or butternut pumpking in some countries)

radish

Pigeon peas

there are also certain fruits like :

guava

soursop (pricly custard apple)

I also wanted to ask if ALL the mushrooms are acid/highly acidic since some of them have very interesting medicinal properties or so I have read. I want to ask specially about certain asian mushrooms like shiitake and reishi.
When you say peas are alkaline to which peas are you referrring? (there are many) do they all have the same alkalinity?
Don’t sweet potatoes have too much sugar?

Sorry for so many questions i’m trying to build a diet based on your chart :) Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi Ross,

Thank you for all the help you are giving. I now have a few questions. I have noticed that macadamia nuts and hazelnuts are on both lists for alkaline and acid foods. Is this for the same reason as brown rice? Is sweet potato allowable in the 20 percent part of a meal? I notice that cous cous is an ingredient in some recipes, but is not listed on the charts. Is it acid or alkaline? Would raw, soaked (sprouted) cashew nuts still be acid? Goat milk is alkaline, so would cheese made from goat milk be alkaline or acid? Sorry, so many questions!!!

Blessings – Lesley

Ah ha! Eagle eye! Apologies for the confusion caused, it is mildly acidic, but very mildly so, and so can be eaten as part of your 20% acid (80/20 rule) when you have a dish that calls for rice. This is an important distinction to note – the alkaline diet does not mean you can’t ever have pastas or rices ever again, but just make them the 20% minority rather than the 60-80% majority that most of us are used to!

Hey Sophie – thanks for the kind words. You can definitely train for the half and go alkaline – in fact it will really help! I went alkaline just as I started training for the London Marathon back in ’05 and it really made a big difference.

Here are a few tips:

Start taking a good quantity of omega oils (primarily omega 3). Udo’s Choice is a fantastic omega oil blend. This will really help you to feed your body with healthy fats to use as energy instead of glucose/sugars/carbs. This helps no end with endurance.Buy Slow Burn by Stu Mittleman. This is an incredible book on distance running and the alkaline diet. It is truly magnificent. You can also find Stu on FacebookEat Enough! I know it is called the alkaline diet but it is not really a diet – it is a lifestyle and is in no way intended for you to restrict yourself in terms of the quantity of food you eat. Feed your body!

I hope this helps! Good luck!
